PW was fairly cooperative during interrogation and his information, although limited, is considered fairly reliable. However, his memory was vague as to place names & dates.
a. PW was inducted and assigned to the 239th Inf Regt 27 Feb 49, after which he, and 20 others, were assigned to the NK II Corps which was then located in a small unknown village, 5 miles NE of PYONGGANG (CT 5253). Upon arrival there, they were assigned to the 2nd Regt (800 troops) which was attached directly to the II Corps.
O/a 6 Dec 50, PW’s Regt left for PYONGGANG, where it remained for two days. It then departed for KUMHWA and departed there o/a 8 Dec 50, for YONCHON (CT3117). While enroute his unit met the 9th Div, 2 kms NE of SIJONG NI (CT 4721), to which it was attached.
PW’s Regt then departed for YONCHON with 500 troops. 300 of the 500 troops remained with Regt Hqs which was established approx 5 miles NE of YONCHON (Exact location unk) 12 Dec 50. The rest of the unit proceeded to YONCHON. 122000 Dec, when it arrived in the vicinity of YONCHON (Exact location unk), the 1st Bn came under enemy fire and was compelled to disperse. While attempting to escape into the hills, 131200 Dec, PW was captured by the ROK Forces.
b. PW heard from his platoon leader that the 10th NKA Div was on the E coast and the 2nd NKA Div was somewhere on the W coast.
c. The mission of PW’s 2nd Regt was to engage and defeat the enemy defending YONCHON, and to occupy the town.
d. Personalities:
1st Bn CO: CH’OE Song Kyu (崔聖奎).
1st Plat Ldr: PAK Sun Myon (朴宣勉).
e. PW’s 1st Bn had 9 Russ AT rifles (20-30 rds per gun), 6 LMGs (200-300 rds ea) and an undetermined number of PPsh, M-1 rifles, Carbines and Model 38 Rifles with 50-100 rds per man.
f. No surrender leaflets or broadcasts were read or heard of by PW. PW had no knowledge of CCF troops whatsoever.
