2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and had a good memory. He had a great deal of experience in construction work in MANCHURIA. Worked in various areas building airfields and factories for the Japanese Government. He was very familiar with the MU-TAN-CH’IANG Area (牡丹江) and did construction work in airfield, factories and army bases.
PW surrendered to ROK Troops. Reliability, excellent.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
2 Sep 50 - Inducted in CH’ONGJIN (淸津) with approx 600 others.
8 Oct 50 - Arrived in P’YONGYANG (平康) with 450 men without arms of any kind.
11 Oct 50 - PW separated from the others and after hiding in the mountains for 3 days in SINGO-SAN (新高山) decided to surrender and gave himself up to the ROK troops.
1935 - 1946 - PW worked for OKURA DOBOKU KABUSHIKI KAISHA (大倉土木株式會社) also known as OKURA Engr & Construction Co, Ltd of JAPAN. Spent approximately 11 years in construction around MU-TAN-CH’IANG (牡丹江). Main office was located in the city of MUTANCHIANG. Two airfields, a paper mill and a large Army base were located in the neighborhood. (See sketch A for locations)
HAI-LUNG Airfield: The HAI-LUNG Airfield (海浪) was approximately 50-50 m higher in elevation than MU-TAN-CH’IANG. HAI-LUNG Airfield was built by the Japanese Air Force. Presumably is now in use by either CCF or the Russians. (See sketch B)
Building and Hangers: The barracks were of various sizes, had brick walls and corrugated iron roofings. The hangars were 60 m x 40 x 8 m of brick walls and corrugated iron roof.
Approximately 50 hangars were used for assembling, repairing and storage of aircraft.
Runways: The field was 600 m long including the 100 m concrete ramp. Utilized 6 straight runways. The entire surroundings were rolled gravel.

CHINESE 8th ROUTE ARMY BASE IN AI-HO (愛河):
3 km NE of MU-TAN-CH’IANG was an Army Base previously occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army (KWANTUNG Army). Prior to PW return to KOREA this base was occupied by the Chinese 8th Route Army.
Area of the Base: 12 km x 12 km consisted of unestimated number of brick buildings from 1-story to 4-story high. Capable of h■using a division or more.

MANCHU PAPER WORKS in HUA-LIN (樺林):
4 km NW of HU-TAN-CHIANG (牡丹江) was a MANCHU Paper Works in HUA-LIN (樺林). Manufactured all types of paper.
Area and Buildings: 150 m x 150 m square in area. Composed of 9 main buildings. The processing of paper was done in the following buildings:
1. Sawing and chopping of logs.
2. Boiler building.
3. 4 m x 12 m Boiler.
4. Chemical processing.
5. Final processing building.
6. Acid (HGL) building.
7. Maintenance and Machine shop.

b. Shapers
c. Milling machines
d. Drill presses
e. Welding outfits.
8. Water tank 5,000 T.
9. Power house (3 steam boiler and 1 generator) Generator produced 3,300 kw
Remarks: Above equipment was made in Germany.
