3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:30 Jul 50 - Inducted at HUNGNAM (興南) and attached to the 2nd Bn of the 588th Unit. (At this time the 588th Unit HQs was located in WONSAN (元山).
Received 15 days of military training.
13 Oct 50 - The 588th Unit HQs, the 1st and 3rd Bns retreated from WONSAN to HUNGNAM and joined the 2nd Bn.
15 Oct 50 - The entire 588th Unit departed HUNGNAM by truck.
19 Oct 50 - Arrived at HYESANJIN (惠山鎭).
28 Oat 50 - The reorganized 588th Unit departed HYESANJIN by foot and arrived at a point 6km N of PUNGSAN (豊山) 1 Nov 50.
8 Nov 50 - Retreated to SANNAM (山南) due to heavy Arty shelling.
16 Nov 50 - Deserted and surrendered to UN troops.
4. ORGANIZATION:The 588th Unit was composed of 3 Arty Bns, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bns. Each Bn had 3 Cos and a Commo Plat. The 588th Unit equipment included 36/76mm Arty guns (12 per Bn), 35 Russian made trucks, approx 1,300 rifles and approx 7,000 hand grenades.
The original strength of the 588th Unit while in the WONSAN area, was 1,300 men. However, at the time the unit retreated and arrived at HYESANJIN the total strength was down to 400. By 28 Oct 50 the unit was equipped only with rifles.
At the time PW deserted (16 Nov 50) the total strength of the 588th Unit was approx 100.
Between 11 Nov 50 and 16 Nov 50, PW observed the 401st, 507th and 249th Units, preparing for action in the mountains approx 1-3km N of SAN NAM. The above units were equipped with heavy machine guns, antitank guns, and antiaircraft machine guns.
Believes the total strength of the 401st, 507th and 249th Unit was approx 800 men. (Heard from a Commo Plat soldier)
