FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0257) 18 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG YUNG YANG (張永样)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was inducted into the CCF approximately 1 year ago. He had no education and was a farmer prior to his induction.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
After the 376th Regt crossed the YALU River at CHIAN (date unknown), the 3d Bn traveled on foot for approximately 9 days and by passed a railroad station. The 30 Bn Hq was set up approximately 1 mile South of the railroad station, and the troops lived in dugouts approximately 3 miles South of the railroad station (exact location unknown). This station was destroyed by air attacks. PW did not know the whereabouts of the other battalions of the 376th Regiment.
O/a 3 Nov 50 the 7th Co of the 3rd Battalion moved to a hill approximately 10 miles south of the railroad station where they stayed for five days. They were then attacked by UN forces. The Company fought for approximately 8 hours and retreated to the rear. PW stated that no orders were given to retreat but when the Company Commander withdrew, all other personnel followed. Some wounded soldiers were evacuated. PW and one other were not evacuated and were captured on the second day by the 7th Division. PW estimated approximately one half of the 130 men in the company were either killed or wounded; majority of casualties were caused by mortar fire.
PW stated they were never told about coming to Korea. The unit moved out at night. PW did not know what the public is reaction was. When orders were given to move at TUNGHWA, approximately 16 soldiers deserted from the company.

Organization and Equipment:
7th Company is a rifle company of three rifle platoons and one mortar platoon. The mortar platoon is equipped with three 60mm mortars. The rifle platoons each had 2XLMGs, 3 sub-machine guns, and an unknown number of rifles.

5. MORALE AND PROPAGANDA:
It is PW’s belief that the people in Manchuria would welcome the return of the Chinese Nationalist troops and Chiang’s Government. Prior to PW’s induction he had often heard people speak against the Communist regime, and he feels that the greater percentage of the people are against the Communists but dare not show it while they are in control. PW stated that when the CCF marched thru towns the public was told to be on the streets to welcome the troops.
PW is one of the first two from the 376th Regiment, 126th Div to be captured. The other PW (HSIA WEN HSIANG (夏文慶) was captured at the same time and from the same unit.
