3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into CNA 62d Army, 95th Div at TAINAN HSIEN (台南縣) Nov 45.
Sep 46, 62d Army arrived PEIPING (北平) where the unit engaged CCF Units.
Feb 47, deserted 95th Div in PEIPING area but was apprehended and forced to join the CNA 43d Div in TIENTSIN (天津).
Aug 47, 43d Div arrived CHULI HO (巨離河) where unit engaged CCF Units. During Oct 47, Div was surrounded by CCF 39th Army, 116th Div at CHULI HO and surrendered.
25 Oct 47, PW and one other escaped from their captors at HSIN MIN HSIEN (新民縣) and made their way to SHENYANG (瀋陽市) and joined CNA Youth Army, 207th Div 3 Nov 47.
Jan 48, Div arrived FUSHUN (撫順) for training.
Jul 48, departed FUSHUN and arrived SUCHIATUN (蘚家屯) where unit engaged CCF Units.
29 Oct 48, a majority of 207th Div troops surrendered to CCF 39th Army 116th Div at SUCHIATUN.
3 Nov 48, PW and troops captured by CCF 39th Army, 116th div were assigned to capturing unit at SUCHIATUN.
Dec 48, CCF 39th Army arrived KUANNEI (關內) - TIENTSIN Area and conducted offensive operations against CNA Units.
From Feb 49 to Apr 49, Army held maneuvers in PEIPING Area.
From Apr 49 to Nov 49, marched southward, engaging retreating CNA Units at LIUCHOU (枊州), MANNING (南寧), and KWANGHSI (廣西).
Nov 49, departed KWANGHSI and arrived HUNAN SHENG (湖南省).
5 Jan 50 arrived HONAN SHENG (河南省) where unit engaged in farming until Jun 50.
Jun 50, departed HONAN SHENG and arrived HAICHENG (海城) where the unit held maneuvers until Oct 50.

Oct 50, departed HAICHENG and entered KOREA through ANTUNG-SINUIJU (XE 1839) and arrived UNSAN (YE 3928) area where 39th Army, 116th Div engaged US 24th Div Oct 50.
Nov 50, arrived MASANG DONG (YE 4736) where the unit rested for approx one week.
25 Nov 50. arrived UNSAN area and engaged US Forces. After a victorious operation in UNSAN area, marched through mountainous terrain and entered PYONGYANG 8 Dec 50.
15 Dec 50, departed PYONGYANG and marched southward to 38th parallel on IMJIN River, arriving 24 Dec 50.
010600 I Jan 51, attacked southward from 38th parallel line and entered SEOUL 5 Jan 51.
348th Regt, 116th Div attacked further southward from SEOUL as other regiments of 116th Div remained in SEOUL 5 Jan 51.
10 Jan 51, Regt returned SEOUL and rejoined 116th Div. Units of 50th Army replaced 348th Regt in frontline.
5 Feb 51, 39th Army, 116th Div, Recon Co, departed SEOUL as advance element of 39th Army arrived CHIPYONG (CS 7948) 10 Feb 51.
From 10 Feb 51 to 12 Feb 51, 116th Div engaged UN Units in CHIPYONG area.
13 Feb 51, Div retreated to CHOWON NI (DS 0453).
24 Feb 51, PW and 4 others (including 116th Div Recon Staff Officer) departed CHOWON NI and arrived ICHUN NI (phonetic) (伊春里) (believed to be 8 Km S of CHOWON NI).
24 Feb 51, PW deserted and surrendered to US 1st Marine Div 27 Feb 51 at DS 0947.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
24 Feb 51, 39th Army Hq was in a farm house 1 Km NE of CHOWON NI (DS 0453). Hq had been located here since 13 Feb 51.
24 Feb 51, 116th Div Hq was within CHOWON NI.
Troops of 39th Army hid in mountains surrounding CHOWON NI during daylight hours and lived in farm houses in the CHOWON NI Area, as of 24 Feb 51.
24 Feb 51, 66th Army Hq was located ICHUN NI (伊春里) believed to be near DS 0852.
24 Feb 51, 66th Army was on the line, facing UN unit with 39th Army resting to the rear of 66th Army area.
26 Feb 51, truck battalions of 39th and 66th Armies were at CHANGSU RI (CS 0147). PW observed over 20 trucks at CHANGSU RI. Heard that CHANGSU RI was used as a supply distribution center of 66th and 39th Armies. Supplies were said to be brought here by truck from SEOUL Area.
26 Feb 51, observed 60th Artillery Regt of an Artillery Division of 4th Field Army 12 Km South of HONGCHON (DS 0271) (on the road leading to HOENGSONG from HONGCHON). Observed 3 x 105mm Howitzers (■S) camouflaged with rice straw on both sides of the road (approx 10mm to 50m off the road). Heard that two other regiments of Artillery division of which the 60th Army Regt is part had been sent back to CHINA. (reason unknown).
He slept overnight in this unit area with a friend who is with this 60th Artillery Regt.

c. T/O & E and Strength:
4th Field Army: 13th, 14th, and 15th Army Groups, 1 Arty Div.
13th Army Group: 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st, 42d, & 50th Armies, 1 Arty Regt.
Personnel losses were caused chiefly by UN air and artillery strikes.

d. Personalities:
PENG Te Hwai (Phonetic), Commander in Chief
Chinese Forces in KOREA. Formerly 3rd Field Army CG
CHEN, Yung Kang (陳永康), CO
2d Recon Co, 116th Div, 39th Army.

e. Replacements:
Heard on 5 Jan 51 that a large number of CCF replacements would arrive in future.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was procured locally by 116th Div units since arriving in KOREA. Observed pork and rice starch from CHINA at CHANGSU RI 24 Feb 51.

g. Armor, Artillery and Aircraft:
Heard on 10 Feb 51 that CCF Mechanized Units would arrive in future at which time an all-out offensive by CCF Units in KOREA was to start.

h. Signal:
Telephone was utilized for communication by companies (only those holding important defensive positions) and higher units.
Cavalry troops were used as mounted messengers.

i. UN PW:
Observed approx 100 US PW at UNSAN Oct 50. Heard that these PW would be sent to CHINA.
Observed 86 US PW at CHIPYONG NI 12 Feb 51. Believed that PW were sent to MANCHURIA.

j. Medical:
No communicable diseases or frozen feet cases were noticed in 116th Div.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered because he read a leaflet stating all PW would be treated fairly. He could not recall where he had seen the leaflets.
