PW, was of low intellect, although right arm wounded, was cooperative and answered freely during interrogation. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
334th Regt of approx 1,000 men entered KOREA via CHIAN, MANCHURIA and arrived KANGGYE (BA9737) 16 Oct 50. After engaging UN Forces at TOKCHON marched to 38th parallel. Waded across HAN River holding their weapons and clothing over their heads, arriving at Hill 578 14 Feb 51.
150400 Feb, UN Forces started an attack and overran PW position at 0600 hr and he was captured.
b. Organization and Strength:
112th Div consisted of 334th, 335th, and 336th Regt. The 334th Regt had 1st, 2d, and 3d, Bn. The 1st Bn had 1st, 2d, 3d Co, and a MG Co. Each Co had an original strength of approx 160 men but at present only 90 men. The 3d Co has 1st, 2d, and 3d Plat. Each Plat had an original strength of approx 40 men but at present strength is 20 men.
c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
3d Co CP was at the foot of Hill 578 (CS527405) approx 4 Km SE of where he was captured. 1st Bn CP was located approx 4 Km SE of 3d Co CP and 334th Regt CP was in a valley approx 5 Km N of 1st Bn CP.
d. Status of Arms and Ammunition:
Every man in his Co had M-1 US rifles with approx 100 rds of ammo. Within Co there were 2 LMG with approx 500 rd of ammo. Each man carried 4 hand grenades.
e. Status of Food and Clothing:
Every man in his Sqd received a pair of shoes 14 Feb 51 while at hill 578.
Heard from his Co CO that they were not issued any clothing because supply trucks that entered KOREA are strafed and bombed by UN planes enroute.
f. Mission and Intention:
The mission of 334th Regt was to hold hill 578 at any cost, but on 150600 Feb their position was overrun.

h. Medical:
In his Co 3 men were sent to the rear because of frost bite. Prior to captured 3 had frost bite and 1 had dysentery. There were no known epidemic cases.
i. Psychological Warfare:
Saw surrender leaflets on several occasions, but because he could not read, he did not pick them up, nor did he hear of their contents from others.
14 Feb 51, on hill 578 heard for the first time air broadcast and realized that UN Forces were taking prisoners, He heard it clearly word for word.
