FIELD REPORT(528 MISPI-0144) 26 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a former CNA soldier and was integrated into the CCF in May 46. PW spoke freely and was cooperative. Certain Korean name place are phonetic and taken as the PW gave them. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese and evaluation of information should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology.
PW volunteered for the Chinese Nationalist Army on 20 Nov 43 at SHANSI (山西). PW was assigned to the 61st Nationalist Army, 48th Div Hq at SHANSI FUSHIEN (山西滿縣). PW remained with this unit until Mar 1945. PW was discharged Mar 45 and remained at his home until Sep 45. PW then joined the HONAN-SHENG, WULING-HSIEN (下南省 武陟縣) Security Police and remained with this unit until May 46. PW was integrated into the CCF in May 46 and was assigned to an Independent Unit, which was later redesignated the 47th Regt. This Regt was later redesignated the Ind 7th Brigade, 19th Regt. This unit was again redesignated as security Forces, 2nd Regt and at that time PW was commissioned a 2nd Lt. 25 Aug 50 this Security Force was integrated into the 66th Army. PW was assigned to the 196th Div, 586th Regt at TIENTSIN (天津). While at TIENTSIN, the 586th Regt engaged in agricultural work. 22 Oct 50, the 586th Regt entrained for ANTUNG (安東) and arrived on 26 Oct 50. The 586th Regt crossed the YALU River on the night of 27 Oct 50. PW stated that the 586TH Regt was joined by the 587th and 588th Regts, comprising the 196th Div, at vic of CHOLSAN (XE4304) 28 Oct 50. The entire 196th Div departed there and arrived 3½ km E of KUSONG (XE9228) o/a 1 Nov 50. The 196th Div remained at this location for approx. 2 days then marched to vic of WOLSAN DONG (越山洞) o/a 4 Nov 50. The 196th Div remained at vic of WOLSAN DONG for approx. 3 days. The 586th Regt then moved to SONCHON (XE6406) and back to vic WOLSAN DONG o/a 9 Nov 50. O/a 10 Nov 50 the entire 196th Div departed for NAMSI (XE9218) arriving approx. 2 nights later. The 196th remained at NAMSI for approx. 1½ week preparing gun positions, foxholes and preparing roads. The 196th Div then departed for TKHWA DONG (德化洞), The 1st Bn, 586th Regt went to u/k location approx. 8 km SW of TOKHWA DONG. The 1st Bn then received orders to move to SONGCHON DONG (松川洞) and arrived there 25 Nov 50. PW stated that the 196th Div was never committed in action. PW’s unit started to withdraw on the same day and PW remained behind with two others because of exhaustion. Upon sighting elements of the ROK Army, PW raised his hands and surrendered.

b. Unit Organization and Strength.
The 66th Army is composed of the 196th, 197th and the 198th Divs. The 196th Div is composed of the 586th, 587th and the 588th Inf Regts and on Howitzer Bn. The 586th Regt was composed of 3 Inf Bns, 1 HW Co, 1 Guard Co, 1 Special Troops Co. The 1st Bn, 586th Regt was composed of 3 Rifle Cos, and on HW Co.

c. Equipment.
The HW Co had 4 X 82 mm motors, 6 HMGs (Chinese make). The Guard Co had 3 medium sire mortars (exact size u/k), 9 LMGs. The personnel were armed with Jap 38 rifles and 5 hand grenades each. The Special Troops Co had 3 LMGs and Jap 38 rifles. Each Rifle Co had 9 LMGs, 3 medium size mortars (size u/k) and Jap rifles. The HW Co attached to the 1st Bn was equipped with 4 x 82 mm mortars and 6 LMGs.
PW observed 6 or 7 horse-drawn mountain guns (size u/k) in the 196th Div. No recoilless weapons or rocket launchers were observed in the 196th Div.

d. Unit Assignment and Intentions.
The 1st Bn, 586th Regt was ordered to defend SONCHONG DONG. PW did not know the plan of defense because his unit withdrew immediately and did not have time to set up defensive positions. Details on other units of the 196th Div pertaining to assignment and intentions u/k to PW.

e. Disposition.
The 586th Regt’l CP was located at TOKWADONG (德化洞) on 24 Nov 50. The Bns comprising the 586th were deployed around TOKHWADONG.

f. Communication.
The Special Troops Co handled all communications for the Regt. PW heard that there were 1 wireless sat (make u/k) and numerous telephones in this Co. Telephone lines were laid on the ground. No knowledge of cod used in communications.

g. Knowledge of Other Units.
PW stated that he heard of ot’er CCF units crossing the border but did not know the unit designation.

h. Personalities.

i. Armor and Artillery.
PW stated that he did not observe any tanks in the 196th Div. The only arty pieces observed were the 6 or 7 Mtn gun in the 196th Div.

j. Defensive Works and Fortifications.
While at NAMSI (XE9218), the 196th Div prepared gun emplacements, fox holes and machine gun nests. These positions were prepared approx 2 km N of NAMSI on a hill. Exact location u/k. Theses position were constructed with logs and camouflaged with leaves.

k. Morale and Propaganda.
Morale in PWs unit was low due to lack of weapons and discipline. PW stated that approx. 80% of the personnel in his unit had intentions of deserting. PW had no desire to fight and stated that the majority of the personnel in his unit felt the same.
The 197th Div was subjected to air strikes while at NAMSI (XE9218). PW did not observe any casualties and stated that the reason was due to troops being well concealed.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammunition.
Food was locally procured and PWs unit ate an average of two meals per day. Each rifleman was issued 100 rds of s/a ammo and 5 hand grenades. There were approx. 799 rds for each MG and 79 rds for medium sized mortars. Ammunition was transported from TUNGPEH (東北) (route u/k).

b. Uniform Worn at Time of Interrogation.
PW was wearing the NK winter uniform with red pipings on trousers and jacket sleeves, plus black canvas top shoes with rubber soles. PW stated that they (586th Regt) turned in their CCF uniform at NATUNG and at that time his Regt’l Comdr told them that they were to wear the NKA uniform.
