CHRONOLOGY:
8 Jan 40 - Entered MANCHURIA, CHILIN-SHENG, HUATIEN-HSIEN, HENGTAOHOTZU. (滿洲 吉林省 樺甸県 横道河子). Engaged in farming.
1 Nov 45 - Moved to CHILIN-SHENG, YENCHI-HSIEN HOPIOTZU (滿洲 吉林省 延吉縣 河皮河子). Continued farming.
20 May 49 - Volunteered for the CCF, 11th Div, stationed in CHANGCHUN (長春).
May 49 - Jul 49 - Received basic training with the 10th Regt, 3rd Bn, 9th Co.
12 Jul 49 - Left CHANGCHUN with the entire division.
14 Jul 49 - Arrived NANAM (羅南) via TUMEN (圖們).

FORMER CHINESE COMMUNIST UNIT
CCF, 11th Division. PW was with the Unit from May 49 until it entered KOREA on 12 Jul 49.

Company:
Each company consisted of 150 men. There were 3 platoons of 40 men each. Each platoon had four squads of 11 men each. Each company had a HMG platoon and a medical squad attached. Each squad had 8 rifles, one AT-Tank MG and 2 sub-machine guns. HMG platoon had 2 Maxim HMG M-1910.

Battalion:
There were 3 companies in a battalion, Attached Units were a 82mm Mortar Company, two Antitank Companies, one HMG Company, a Medical Platoon and a Signal Platoon. The 82mm mortar company had 9 mortars, AT company had three AT guns. HMG company had 9 Maxim M-1910 HMGs. The signal platoon had three field telephones.

Regiment:
There were 3 Bns in a regiment. There was an Automatic Weapon Company, Medical Company, and Signal Company attached.

Division:
There were 3 Infantry Regiments and one Artillery Regt in the Division. The Infantry Regts were the 10th, 11th and the 12th. There were about 1,000 men in each Regiment. The Artillery Regt had 3 x 122mm field pieces and an unknown number of 76mm Mortars and 2 GAZ 51 trucks. There were Medical Bn, Signal Bn, Automatic Weapon Bn and Band attached to the Division. The approximate strength was 12,000. The Division was composed entirely of Koreans.

LOCATION OF UNIT AT TIME OF DEPARTURE:
The Unit was located at CHANGCHUN.

RECRUITING PROGRAM
PW volunteered for the CCF because he believed its propaganda. The CCF propaganda method was as follows:
About 3 CCF soldiers would gather the people in one place and tell them that if they joined the CCF they would be treated well. After the war with the Nationalists was over, they would be given land and houses at any desired place. They were told that any person who desired to marry would be permitted to do so. PW wanted to get married and that was one reason he volunteered, There were no set procedures to follow in order to volunteer. There were no physical examinations nor age limits.

PAY OF PERSONNEL
There was no pay in the CCF for the EM, but they received 5 yuan every month to buy tobacco. 5 yuan was sufficient to cover one months rations of leaf tobacco, The officers pay unknown.

RATION AND CLOTHING
PW was issued 2 cotton uniforms, a cap and cloth shoes. These shoes lasted about 6 months providing they did not become wet. No under clothing issued. Troops went into summer uniforms in March and winter uniforms in October. In June the summer uniforms were exchanged for new ones. New clothing was issued every season. The winter clothing issue was one winter uniform, one fur lined cap and gloves, and one pair of heavy cotton socks. The summer uniform was worn under the winter uniform.
