CHRONOLOGY:
15 May 1907 - Born at KYONGSANG PUKTO, ANDONG GUN (慶尙北道 安東郡), KOREA
Oct 1924 - Attended up to 3 yr middle school and until 1930 worked at various jobs.
Oct 1931 - Worked in restaurant as a clerk at KYUNGSANG PUKTO, TAEGU City (慶尙北道 大邱), KOREA
1932 – 39 - Worked in a “sake”(酒) shop as a clerk at KYONGSANG NAMDO, MASAN City(慶南 馬山市), KOREA.
1940 – 42 - Worked as a clerk in the MATSUOKA GUMI construction crew at MUKDEN (奉天), MANCHURIA.
Apr 46 - Mar 48 – Worked as a clerk in the Koreans Democratic Organization as a clerk. This organization was located in LINKUO (林口), MANCHURIA
May 48 – Aug 48 - Worked as a logger at MULENG-HSIEN, MUTANCHIANG-SHENG (槐陵縣 牡丹江省), MANCHURIA
Dec 48 – Returned to HAEJU (海州), KOREA, and from April 49 to Oct 50 worked as a clerk in the Food Bartering Association.
Oct 50 – Drafted as a forced laborer and on his way to his destination was captured at SOHUNG (瑞興) on 16 Oct 50.

3 – SOCIOLOGICAL
Town of LINKOU              LINKUO (林口), MANCHURIA

Observation: (See sketch #2)
PW during above-mentioned period was living in LINKUO. and from 1946 to 1948, worked as a clerk in the Korean Democratic Organization. During period May 45 - May 48 PW observed the following:
Population:
Japanese – 200; Koreans – 1,000 ; Chinese and Manchurians – 50,000.
Type of Labor:
Japanese were mostly engaged in RR work, and two were marking in RR hospital as a doctor and nurse. PW heard that these people were treated as technicians and received better pay than the Chinese and Manchurian population. PW also stated that the technical knowledge of this Japanese was of a lower standard compared to that of the Japanese technicians prior to the war. Majority of the Chinese in Manchurians were engaged as farmers, with few employed in official capacities.
Education

(A) Korean Primary and Middle School    LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA

Approx 2km SSE of the LINKUO RR station and on the immediate south eastern outskirts of the Korean residential area.
Description:
Covered an area of approx. 100m x 90m and was surrounded by trees of approx 1.5m in height. The playground was on the eastern sector of the area. Classrooms were on the western sector, as shown on following sketch.

School building was brick with tile roof. Building measured approx. 80m x 25m x 8m. Single story.
Number of students:
Primary school students – 150
Middle school students - 40
Number of Teachers:
About 8 Korean teachers were employed, but these teachers were not qualified teachers.
Subjects Taught:
Besides the usual subjects taught in schools, political indoctrination (Communism) was also taught.

(B) Primary and Middle School (Manchurian)  LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA

Approx 1.5km SW of the LINKUO RR station, and approx 1.5 km W of the LINKUO City Hall.
Description:
Covered an area approx 80m x 7m, enclosed by trees which were approx 6m in height. See following sketch:
Two school buildings of brick with galvanized iron, gable type roof, each measuring about 40m x 12 m x 6m were observed. Interior details unknown. PW stated that these buildings were constructed around Sept 47.
Number of Students:
About 500 Manchurian students.
Number of teachers:
About 8 Manchurian teachers were employed here.

(C) Primary School (Manchurian)       LINKUO (林口), MANCHURIA

Health and Sanitation

Prefectural Hospital             LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA
Forced Laborer               D/O May 45 – May 48

Approx 1 km SE of the LINKUO RR Station and approx 1 km NE of the LINKUO City Hall.
Description of Building:
2-story brick building approx 15m x 4m with tiled roof, gables type. Area was not enclosed by any fence.
Following is a detailed sketch of the interior as known to the PW:
Number of Doctors:
Two-One Korean and one Manchurian. The Korean, Kim, Yong Hae, 34, was formerly a police surgeon under the Japanese. He was forced to work in this hospital.
Number of Nurse:
Three Korean nurses were employed here. Two of these nurses were qualified nurses and the other was an apprentice. Average age of these nurses was around 20 or 21.
Description of Hospital Interior:
The receiving room, pharmacy, nurses quarters, and patient's room were located on the 1st floor. All medicines used at this hospital were of Japanese make, with a few smuggled USA medicines and some imported Russian medicine.
A surgery room and an internal treatment room were located on the 2nd floor. Only surgery kit was observed on the on the 2nd floor. PW stated that equipment and facilities of this hospital were very poor and major operations could not be done.
Number of Patients:
About 30 patients were observed here.
Type of Diseases:
Majority of patients were suffering from tuberculosis.
Personnel:
The head of this hospital was a government official. Name unknown.

RR Hospital                LINKUO (林口), MANCHURIA

1km NW of the RR station, and about 500m SE of the Locomotive Repair Shop.
Description:
See following sketch:
It was a brick building with tiled, gable type roof, measuring approx 60m x10m. Two-thirds of this building was used as the hospital, and the rest was used as a RR office. A consultation room, pharmacy, and a patients room were observed.
Number of Employees:
One unqualified Japanese doctor, age around 30, with one Japanese nurse and three Manchurian nurses.

4 – POLITICAL
City Hall                  LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA

Approx 1km SSE of the LINKUO RR Station.
Description:
See following sketch:
Covered an area of approx 40m x 25 m and was enclosed by an approx 2m-high brick wall. Two entrances were observed one the east and west.
Buildings:
The following types of buildings were observed:
(a) Administration Offices - Brick building, with a slated, gable type roof measuring approx 15m x 4m x 5m. The offices in this building were finance, census registration office, agriculture and forestry office, health and sanitation, construction, food, provision, education, and coal mine office. Approx 40 to 50 Chinese and Manchurians were employed here.
(b) Mayors Office - Brick building with slated, gable type roof measuring approx 15m x 4m x 5m.

LINKUO Prefectural Office          LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA

Location: (See Sketch #2, Item #6)
Approx 1.5 km ESE of the LINKUO RR station and approx. 500m E of the Prefecturally Operated Hospital.
Observation:
PW was a clerk during the period 1946 to 1948 in the Korean Democratic Organization.
Description:
Covered an area of approx 40m x 100m and was enclosed by a 2m-high brick wall.
Two buildings were observed as described in following sketch
Building (A) was constructed of brick with tiled gable type roof, measuring about 70m x 12m x 6m. Besides the administration offices’s of the city, two other offices, which were the Foreign Affair Section and Veterinary Section, were located here.
The Prefectural governor was a Chinese, name unknown, and also the Vice-Governor was a Chinese, name unknown.
Building (B) was also constructed of brick, with tiled, cable type roof measuring approx 6m x 40m x 6m. This building was divided into 2 following sections:
(a) Kitchen
(b) Boiler Room - One boiler for heating, of unknown make was installed. One brick smokestack approach 20m in height from ground was observed on the east side of the boiler room. Amount of coal consumed here was unknown.
(c) Warehouse – Interior of this warehouse was unknown.
Number of Employees:
Approx 200 persons were employed here. 40 to 50 out of these 200 were Chinese. Rest were Manchurians and Koreans.
Work Hours:
0800 to 1700 hours. After working hours, classes were held for Communist indoctrination. Further information unknown.

Police Station                LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA

Approx 500m SE of the LINKUO RR station and about 500m N of the Japanese RR workers’ residential area.
Observation:
PW was living in this area from May 45 to May 48 and during period observed this police station frequently.
Description:
See following sketch:
Building (A) was the Police Station and was a brick structure, with tiled, gable type roof. Building measured about 8m x 30m x 5m. Interior of building was unknown.
Building (B) was a jail. It was a brick structure, with tiled, gable type roof. The jail was enclosed by a 3m-high brick wall, which covered an area of approx 20m x 20m.
The Police Station area was enclosed by a 5 m-high barbed wire fence and measured about 40m x 15m.
No further information.

7 – ARMED FORCES
Military Warehouse             LINKUO(林口), MANCHURIA
Forced Laborer               D/O May 45 – May 48
Location: (See Sketch #2, Item #7)
Approx 1.5km SE of the LINKUO RR station and about 500m S of the Prefectural Office.
Observation:
PW was living in the area from May 45 to May 48 and during period PW frequently observed this military warehouse.
Area:
Covered an area of approx 150m x 120m and was enclosed by a 2.5m-high barbed wire fence. In the four corners of this area, watch towers were observed. Chinese soldiers were posted at those four corners and at the main entrance, which was located on the east side and also at several points within the area.
Buildings:
Two buildings were observed as in following sketch:
Building (a) was brick with galvanized iron, gable type roof. PW stated that he saw military uniforms, shoes being stored in this warehouse while passing by.
Building (b) was a brick structure with galvanised iron, gable type roof. This building was divided into two (2) portions which were as follows:
a. Warehouse
b. Office
Provision Storage - Approx 10 brick constructed, Chinese style, storage places each measuring about 5m in diameter, and 10m in height were observed in this area.
