2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative, and did not attempt to answer when he did not have the information requested. Reliability - Fair.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Apr 35 - Went to FUSHUN (撫順) at 5 yr ■■ age with his parents where they engaged in farming.
Apr 37 - Mar 45 - Graduated from FUSHUN primary and higher primary school. While attending school, he also learned a little about animal diseases from one of his teachers whose name was LUBO ■…■ (■■■■) of ■…■ (靑■) who returned to JAPAN in 1945.
Mar 45 - Jul 45 - Graduated from school in Mar 45 and helped his parents at home until Jul 49.
17 Jul 49 - Drafted by the CCF at FUSHUN (撫順).
18 Jul 49 - 25 Jul 49 - Sent to MUKDEN (奉天) and assigned to Hq of the 203d Div which consisted only of Koreans. He took care of the horses of the Div Hq since he had studied a little about animal disease in primary and higher primary school.
25 Jul 49 - The 203d Div Hq departed MUKDEN (奉天) on the night of 25 Jul but he does not know whether or not any of the subordinate units departed.
26 Jul 49 - Crossed the YALU River at ANTUNG (安東) about 0400 hours. Stayed at SINUIJU (新義州) for 9 months.

ARMED FORCES
AIRFIELD                  MUKDEN (奉天) MANCHURIA

Observation:
Observed this airfield three times on 16, 18, 20 Jul 49 from the road located about 10 m west of the airfield. However, was unable to see the eastern and of the airfield because the road was situated lower than the airfield. Drew a memory sketch of the airfield which is attached to this report. (Sketch #1.)
Location and Name of Airfield:
They called this the MUKDEN Airfield and it was located about 6 km north of the North Mukden RR Station and about 12 km north of the MUKDEN RR Station.
Dimensions: (Hearsay)
Heard from a civilian working on this airfield that it covered an area about 4 km x 2 km. However, he was only able to see a portion of the western part of the field.
Runways and Surfaces:
Observed part of the runways on the western part of the airfield. They were concrete runways about 7 m wide. The runway running east to west was visible for about 400 m and the runway running north to south was visible for about 300 m.
Access:
Observed the road leading to the airfield from the west side. Be did not see the other part of the field so further detail was unknown.
Buildings:
Observed a concrete buildings which, he heard from a civilian working there, was a repair shop. It was located about 300 m east of the asphalt road on the north side of the airfield. The shape of the building was as shown in sketch #1. It had a flat roof, material unknown.
There was a concrete hangar about 70 m x 15 m x 12 m with a concrete roof located 200 m SW of the repair shop and about 15 m south of the asphalt road leading to the repair shop. Heard that there were three hangars and one fuel storage room (as indicated on sketch) in this building.
There was another concrete building 30 m x 10 m x 15 m with flat roof. It was located about 10 m east of the asphalt road running north and south and about 20 m SSW of the hangars. Heard that it was an office and storage room.
There were three brick buildings, 20 m x 5 m x 3.5 m with gabled tile roof located about 20 m north of the asphalt road loading to the repair shop just outside of the NW corner of the airfield. They were quarters for persons working in the repair shop.
Technical Facilities:
Observed two antennas about 60 m high and countless numbers of antennas about 30 m high located about 50 m south of the office and storage room building and about 2.5 m east of the asphalt road running north and south. Also observed a windsack on the west side of the antennas and about 15 m from the asphalt road.
Defense Installations:
Observed pillboxes spaced about 20 m apart but does not known exactly how many there were. There was also a trench about 5 m wide and about 1.5 m deep on the east side of the pillboxes. These pillboxes situated along the western edge of the airfield and the opening of the pillboxes were facing the road on the west.
Meteorology:
The wind in MUKDEN blows all the time but he does not know from which direction. However, he heard that the wind seldom blows from the north and usually blows from the west.
Miscellaneous:
Heard from the civilian workers that the transport airplanes on this field were P-24 (?) and were US made. He also heard that military aircraft used this airfield.

SOCIOLOGICAL
FUSHUN & VICINITY            FUSHUN (撫順) MANCHURIA

Drew a memory sketch of the area and pinpointed and described the places as follows: (For location see attached sketch #2.)
Playground: (Item #1)
1000 m x 1000m, enclosed by a barber fence about 1 m high. This was located about 5.5 km SSE of the FUSHUN RR Station.
Former Japanese Army Barracks Area: (Item #2)
Observed this area from the road located to its west and about 6 km SSE of the FUSHUN RR Station. The area was enclosed by a brick fence with electrified wire on top, about 3 m high.
FHSHUN Technical School: (Item #3)
Observed this school from the street car line located 3 m to its north and about 6 km SE of the FUSHUN RR Station in June 1946. There was one single story brick building 550 m x 15 m x 4.5 m with gabled tile roof. It was surrounded by a wooden fence 700 m x 500 m about 1 m high.
FUSHUN Elementary School: (Item #4)
Observed this elementary school from the street car lone located 3 m to the north and about 6.1 km SE of the FUSHUN RR Station in June 1946. It was a three story brick building 400 m x 15 m x 8 m with flat roof. (Roof material unknown.) The area, which was about 600 x 400 m, was surrounded by oak trees which were 1.5 m high.
East Park (東公園): (Item #5)
This park measured about 1 km free north to south and about 1 km from east to west and it was on a hill about 150 m high, located 7 km ESE of the FUSHUN RR Station. Heard that the Nationalist Army was fortifying this area and he also observed laborers going to the park with various kinds of digging equipment. There was no electrical or mechanical digging equipment. Does not know how nor what part of the park was fortified. The Nationalist and Communist Armies fought at this park in 1948. It took the CCF three days to take this park. No one was permitted to enter the park area before or after the battle. Last observed the park was in Dec 48, and the CCF was stationed there. Thinks that it is still fortified even though it has been taken over by the CCF.
West Park (西公園): (Item #6)
This park measured about 2.5 km from east to west and about 500 m from north to south and was located on a hill about 170 m high, about 4 km SE of the FUSHUN RR Station. The Japanese army fortified this park. The construction was started in 1942 and completed it 1943. After the war, the Chinese Nationalist Army occupied this fortification. A battle with the CCF was carried out at this park and it was taken by the CCF on 17 Nov 48. A gun emplacement in the park is indicated by a circle on the sketch. The eastern part of the park was off limits to all persons before and after the CCF took control of the town. Thinks this is still fortified.
FUSHUN Hospital: (Item #7)
Observed this building when he was going to the hospital for treatment. There were 3 x three story concrete buildings with flat roofs. (Roof material unknown) and one single story concrete building with gabled tile roof. One of the three large buildings was a T shape building and it measured 60 m x 10 m x 9 m. The two wings, extending to the north and south, measured 20 m x 15 m x 9 m. The other two large buildings measured 60 m x 15 m x 9 m. The single story building measured 8 m x 4 m x 1.5 m. This area was surrounded by a brick wall about 300 m x 200 m about 1 m high. Capacity was unknown.
Coal Mining Office: (Item #8)
Observed a crescent shaped concrete building about 100 m long and 10 m wide. There was a wing extending west which was 20 m x 10 m. It was a three story building about 9 m high. It had a flat roof. (Roof material unknown.)
Light Metal Manufacturing Industry: (Item #9)
Observed this plant from the street car that passed to its north in Jan 45. The distance of observation was 10 m. The brick wall was about 250 m x 200 m about 2 m high. Observed one flat roofed building located on the north side of the plant. The wall was too high for further observation.
Thermo Electric Power Plant: (Item #10)
Observed this thermo electric power plant from about 2 m on the east side of the plant in 1942. Last observed this plant in 1946 from the street car running about 600 m south of the plant.PW heard that this thermo electric power plant was constructed by the Russians after the first World War.
There were two concrete buildings, 8 concrete chimneys, and one cooling system in an area enclosed by a barbed wire fence 700 m x 700 m and about 1.50 m high. There was another wire inside the barbed wire fence and it was electrified. The building located in the northern part of the plant appeared to be about a four story building, 400 m x 20 m x 9 m with flat roof. (Roof material unknown.) PW states he heard the humming noise of a mortar in this building. The building on the western side was about 100 m x 10 m x 7 m with flat roof. (Roof material unknown.) There are many electric lines leading in and out of this building from all sides but more lines were leading in and out from the north side than the others. There were 8 concreted chimneys measuring about 4.5 m in diameter in two rows from north to south and they were about 25 m high. Observed that there were 4 chimneys which were about half destroyed but cannot recall which four they were. There was one area which had not water shooting into the air on the east side of the plant. It was believed to be a cooling system. States that all shades of trains on the south side were pulled down while going through this area, as of 1945. The output was unknown.
FUSHUN RR Station: (Item #11)
A two story concrete building 50 m x 7 m x 6 m with a flat roof. (Roof material unknown.)
Concrete Bridge: (Item #12)
About 1000 m x 4 m, about 6 m above the water surface. It was a multi-span reinforced concrete bridge. The pillars were spaced about 50 m apart. The concrete was about 60 cm thick. When the water rose during or after a heavy rain, it flowed over the bridge. Flood months are June and July. The river freezes from Jan to Mar.
Multi-span Reinforced Concrete RR Bridge: (Item #13)
About 1000 m x 6 m and about 7 m above the water. PW thinks the pillars were spaced about 30 m apart and states that it appeared to him that there were more pillars than the bridge indicated at point #12 in attached sketch.
Multi-span Steel Truss Reinforced Concrete Bridge: (Item #14)
1000 m x 4 m and about 6 m above the water.
Police Station: (Item #15)
A two story concrete building 20 m x 6 m x 5 m with gabled tile roof. This was the FUSHUN-HSIEN (撫順縣) Police Station.
FUSHUNCHING (撫順城) RR Station: (Item #16)
This station was located about 7 km NE of the FUSHUN Station. It was a one story brick building, 10 m x 5 m x 2.5 m with gabled tile roof.
Fortified Area: (Item #17)
Heard that this was a fortified area and that it was fortified by the Japanese army. After the war, the Chinese Nationalist Army took over this area. In May 1946, the CCF and the Nationalist Army fought here and it took the CCF about 7 or 8 days to take this hill. Has never been up this hill but heard that it has a commanding view in all directions. In July 1949, this was still a fortified area occupied by the CCF.
