COPPER MINE YENCHI-SHIEN, LAOTOUKOU, TIENPAOSHAN (滿洲 延吉縣 光頭溝 天寶山)
1st Lt D/O Apr 47 - 28 Jul 50
Did not work at this mine as a miner. He was in a squad of Independent Security Guards.
Entered the vertical shaft only once, and he recalled that no electricity was installed. Was not able to draw a sketch of the interior of the mine.
According to hearsay, approximately 180,000 tons of copper was to be dug from this mine.
While stationed here, no copper was being dug. This mine was owned by the Japanese (MITSUI (三井)), but after the war when the mine was abandoned, the natives of that area took all the machines and destroyed the mine. This mine now belongs to the Manchurian Govt, and it is being repaired. Heard that copper was going to be sent to MUKDEN (奉天). Did not know how copper was to be utilized or whether it had any connection with CCF.
Heard that this mine would be fully repaired by 1950 and in operation by the beginning of 1951.
In the lathe shop were three lathes made in JAPAN which were chiefly used in making nails and screws.
In the air compressor room were 3 motors. One was 300 hp, the others were 100 hp each. It was already in operation.
Heard that this mine formerly produced gold and silver; but he also heard that very little of the above mentioned minerals were left.
The mining office was broken down as follows:

ARMED FORCES

1st Lt D/O Feb - Oct 1946
PW was hospitalized in Feb 1946. He had a bad case of frost bite and both big toes had to be amputated.
Troops of KOREAN VOLUNTEER CORPS and of MANCHURIA were hospitalized here. A total of 1000 patients were hospitalized. Most of the patients were brought back from the front where they fought Manchurian and Korean bandits.
PW was in this hospital for approx 8 months. Treatment was excellent and medicine was provided for each patient.
This hospital formerly was a Japanese military hospital, and PW heard that all medical instrument were made in JAPAN and were still in excellent condition. Heard that medicine was brought in from CHILIN (吉林) at the time PW was hospitalized. However, he later heard that all medicine used at the said hospital had been brought in from MUKDEN since Dec 1948. These medical supplies were Japanese which had been imported from Germany earlier.
Was not able to give detailed information on medicine or medical instruments utilized at this hospital. He only knew that this hospital had one X-ray machine.

Doctors: 3 Japanese.
13 Manchurians including the female doctor.
Nurses: About 5 Japanese
