Korean Independent League Central China Branch (朝鮮獨立同盟華中支部)
Organization History: This league was organized in 1940 by LEE, Tok Mu (李德武) and his friend at HONG Taek ho (洪澤湖), CHIANG-SUSHENG (江蘇省) in Central CHINA as a branch of the NORTH CHINA KOREAN INDEPENDENT LEAGUE (華北朝鮮獨立同盟) which had been organized in 1939 by PAK, IL U (朴一禹), MU, Chong (武亭) and CH'OE, Chang Ik (崔昌益) in CHANHSI_SHENG (山西省).
Purpose: The ultimate aim of this league was to win complete independence for KOREA.
Administration and Personnel: This league was organized of Korean Nationalist only. When PW joined the league 16 Jan 44, the total membership was about 15; but in Apr 46 when he left the league for KOREA the total strength of the organization was estimated at 200.
The general operational plan and the assignment of the member to various duties was done by the league leader; LEE, Tok Mu (이덕무). The liaison with the NORTH CHINA KOREAN INDEPENDENT LEAGUE was not maintained very closely because of the distance involved.
Operational Data: The main function of the league was propaganda aimed at Japanese Military Personnel in the area and the local Chinese inhabitant. The main theme was that the war undertaken by JAPAN in CHINA was not for the welfare of the Japanese people in general, but for a few Japanese military aggressors. It exhorted the soldiers to give up their arms and join the league, which was advocating real peace in ASIA. Thus they demoralized the Japanese military personnel and reduced the support of the local Chinese inhabitants. In order to carry out this work effectively the league had to maintain close liaison with the NEW FOURTH ARMY (新四軍) led by CHIN, (fnu) (陳), presently the mayor of SHANGHAI and the commander of EASTERN CHINA AREA COMMUNIST ARMY in the area. The total strength of the NEW FOURTH ARMY (新四軍) was estimated at 7 divisions, which were engaged in fighting against the Japanese. Food, previsions and all other necessary equipment to effect the propaganda work of the league were furnished by the NEW FOURTH ARMY (新四軍). The propaganda pamphlets and leaflets were produced by the league with advice and suggestions by the NEW FORTH ARMY (新四軍). The distribution of the propaganda material was carried out by the league. After the termination of the war the majority of the members returned to KOREA by end of 1946.
