ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 4400

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0104)　30 October 1950

PW was cooperative. Not very intelligent, and not very fluent in Japanese. Reliability, fair; except for information of airfield, poor.

1943 – 10 Jul 49 – PINGAN T’SUN, MANCHURIA. Engaged in farming during the above period.

TOPOGRAPHY :　　　　　　　 WOK’EN-CH’U, MANCHURIA

Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

River: Located about 1 km N of RR Station. Width, 300m. Depth, 1.5m. Gradual slope on both bank. Sand and gravel bottom and bank. River froze to depth of 1m from late Sep to early Mar.

Terrain: Bare mountains, measuring about 300m in height about 3km E of RR Station. Level farm land in all other directions.

Snow: Falls early Sep to late Feb. Begins to thaw early Mar.

Average fall: 30cm | Deepest fall: 60cm.

Temperature: Winter: -30℃ Dec, Jan

Summer: 28℃

Rain: Heavy rainfall – May to Jul

Wind: Strong northwesterly wind from Oct to Feb.

Fogs: Thick fogs during Apr to May. Visibility, 10m.

ECONOMIC　　　　　　　　　 WOK’EN-CH’U

Farms:　　　　　　　　　　　　Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

Large farms planting rice, corn, barley and vegetables were located in all directions around the city.

About 50% of the population of 5000 were engaged in farming. Cultivation and harvesting was all done by and. Chemical fertilizers were not available. Crops were planted in Apr and harvested in Sep. The harvested crops were hauled by wagons to the warehouses and later shipped by rail to other cities.

TRANSPORTATION and COMMUNICATION:

STEEL RR Bridge　　　　　　　WOK’EN-CH’U

Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

Location: 1km N of RR Station

Type: Deck Pratt type steel bridge

Size: 300m in length: There were about 20 concrete piers.

River: Width water flow was about 20-30m on the north and S end of the bridge with sand bars in the middle. Height from water level, 3-5m. Depth of river at bridge point, 1.5m.

Remarks: A single track, standard guage, RR track was laid over the bridge.

STEEL RR Bridge:　　　　　　　WOK’EN-CH’U

Obs: 1943 – 10 Jul 49

Location: 2 km S of RR Station

Type: Deck Pratt type steel bridge.

Size: About 100m in length. About 10 concrete piers.

River: Width of water flow, 90m. Bridge height from water level, unknown. River flowing W. Water, clear. Other information lacking.

Security: None observed.

Remarks: A single track, standard gauge RR was laid over the bridge.

SOCIOLOGICAL　　　　　　　PINGAN-T’SUN

　Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

Population about 400. Manchurian and 100 Koreans. Majority of the people were farmers. Living standard of both Manchurians and Koreans was very low. There was no racial discrimination, but the majority of positions in the local government were held by Manchurians.

Farmers were required to give about 25% of their products to the local government as taxes.

Warehouse　　　　　　　　　Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

Location: 50m W of RR Station

Area: 500 x 700m enclosed by barbed wire fence

Buildings: About 50 wooden buildings of various size

Transportation: One single track, narrow gauge, RR spur from RR Station.

Security: Civilian guard armed with rifles posted at gate. Identification cards required on entering premise.

Remarks: Rice, corn, barley, millet and other products produced on the farms were stored here and later transported by rail to the N and S.

ARMED FORCES　　　　　　　WOKIEN-CH’U

AIRFIELD　　　　　　　　　　Obs: Once Jul 48

Pvt (戰士)

Location: 12km W of the RR Station.

Size: 500 x 1,000m running E to W.

Runway: One concrete runway, size unknown, running E to W.

Facilities: About 15 oval shaped hangars observed to the W end of field. About 30 oval shaped hangars observed at northern end of the field. Size of hangars and construction materials, unknown.

Transportation: 15 to 20m wide gravel road from WOK’EN-CH’U.

Terrain: Level farm land to all directions.

Remarks: Observed field only once while outting grass in the vicinity of the field in Jul 48.

ARMED FORCES:

8th Route Army　　　　　　　　WOK’EN-CH’U

Obs: 1943 – Jul 49

Estimates about 300 8th Route Army personnel were stationed in the city. Men were billeted in ordinary civilian homes. They were khaki and dark green uniform and visored caps. No epaulets or insights were worn. Men were armed with old bolt action Japanese rifles. No other weapons were observed.
