MUNITION WORKS, SHIH-CHIEN (石硯), MANCHURIA

Pvt Obs Dec 46

PW worked through section of the above plant with his friend whose father was employed there. This plant was formerly a pulp mill. It was located approximately 500 meters NE of the SHIH-CHIEN RR Station.
It was heard that this plant was taken over by the CCF in Sep 45. But before the Japanese moved out of the plant they destroyed some of the machinery. For a while the Communist did not allow anyone to enter the plant area. In Dec 45, they started recruiting workers for the plant.
PW believed that production of hand grenades with wooden handle was started May 46. Production rate was not known but PW believed that it was small. The production of F-1 defensive hand grenades (which closely resembles American hand grenades) and 82-mm Mortar shells were started around Jan 47. Production rate was not known. These hand grenades and Mortar Shells were orated in wooden boxes and shipped out by rail. Disposition of these weapons not known. Repairing of small arms such as rifles, and pistols also done at this plant.
PW estimated that approximately 600 workers were employed on this plant. A few Japanese technicians were employed. The work at this plant was on a 24-hour basis.
The large plant area was surrounded by a concrete well. Most of the plant buildings were concrete. Railroad tracks led into the plant area from the SHIH-CHIEN RR Station.
A 70 meters wide river flowed next to this plant.
