ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4344

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0055)　23 October 1950

PW was an illiterate, but cooperative and tried to be helpful, though he occasionally made contradictory statements. Reliability fair.

Jun 45-May 46: MISHAN (密山). Worked on farm.

May 46-May 48: HULIN (虎林) 133°7’-45°9’. Served in the CCF Ind Brig comprised of Koreans only.

May 48-Dec 48: HAOT’OU (好頭) (호두). 3rd Co, 1st Bn, Ind Regt stayed here guarding the HAO-T’OU area.

Dec 48-Feb 49: LIAOGO (遼河) (요하). The 3rd Co moved here guarding the area.

Feb 49-Jun 49: CHANGCH’UN (長春). Ind Regt assembled with two other regt and organized 164th Div, CCF. He served as a guard during the period.

27 Jun 49: Returned to N. KOREA with 164th Div.

This report is covered with a military warehouse area, CCF Military billets at HULIN (虎村) 133°7’45°9’ and an airfield under construction at LIAOHO, MANCHURIA.

Observation:

Warehouses were observed occasionally at HULIN by the PW during the period May 46 to May 48 while guarding the warehouse area.

Location:

The warehouse area was located 500 m N of the HULIN (虎林) RR station, 799 m East of the RR line which led N to HARBIN (哈爾濱) and S to HAOT’OU (好頭) RR station and immediately W of a mountain 400 m in height.

Description:

There were four warehouses constructed of lumber with slate roofs in the warehouse area 750 m x 300 m enclosed by a barbed-wire fence 2.5 meters high. The warehouses each measured 15 m x 6 m x 5m. On one occasion in Aug 47, he observed grenade launchers, 6 x LMG and LMG ammunition being taken out from one of the warehouses.

At this time he also observed former Jap “38” type rifles, Russian made carbines and numerous size boxes stored in the warehouses. PW STATED MAJORITY OF THE Russian carbine appeared old. Content of the boxes was not known. Boxes were labeled in Chinese, English or Russian. Being an illiterate, he was unable to read the signs. He stated that other warehouses were stored with similar equipment as he observed from a crack in the walls. No equipment was observed being drawn from this warehouse other those mentioned previously. He heard from one of the troops that theses warehouses were constructed by the CCF in early part of 1946.

There was one 2-story wooden building 40 m x 20 m x 15m with a slate roof located 700 m W of the RR station. Immediately to the S of the building there was a two-story wooden building 25 m x 15 m x 8 m with a slate roof. This building was utilized as a Hq. there was also a similar building 30 m x 13 m x 8m located 800m NW of the RR station. He stated that the above were former Jap military billets. CCF Ind Regt was billeted in theses buildings. The Regt composed of one arty Bn, three infantry Bn and sub-units such as guard, Engr, Med, and supply platoons which were directly attached to the Regt.

The Regt was composed of only Koreans with ages of between 18 to 25. The total strength was estimated to be 3,000. Majority of the troops were veterans of one year in the service. The regt was shipped out of HULIN in May 48 to CHANGCH’UN, and assembled with two other Regt at CHANGCH’UN and organized as the 164th Div (All Koreans). Entered N. KOREA on 27 Jun 49. It was heard from the Ind Regt CO that CCF was to move into the military billets upon vacation by the Ind Regt. Personalities in the Ind Regt were not known.

Observation: (Dec 48-Feb 49)

The airfield, which was under construction was observed occasionally at LIAOHO (遼河) by the PW while guarding the LIAOHO Area. He also entered the airfield several times when he took a horse to feed grass near the airfield.

Location:

The airfield was located 2 km SW of the town of LIAOHO, 800 m NW of the foot of a mountain 150 m high and 6 km SE of a mountain 300 m high. LIAOHO was situated immediately to the W of the USURI River which bordered MANCHURIA and USSR.

Descriptions:

The PW drew a memory sketch of the airfield and its surrounding area which is inclosed. The airfield which was under construction covered an area 1.5 km x 1 km. the airfield was surrounded by cultivated areas except for an open grassy field to the north.

The airfield surface with sand and gravel was being rolled by a roller pulled by a tractor. There were sand and gravel piles, believed to be used on the airfield surface on the SE portion of the airfield. A ditch 1.5m deep and 1 m in width was being dug around the airfield. Approx 20 to 30 laborers were engaged in digging the ditch. Exact nature of the ditch was not known to the PW but he believed it to be used as a drainage ditch.

There was a one-story wooden building 12 m x 6 m x 4m with a shingle roof which was under construction immediately to the S of the airfield. No other building was observed in the vicinity of the airfield. PW could not observe construction materials in the airfield vicinity.

Construction supervisor was a Chinse who wore civilian clothes. No military personnel were observed at LIAOHO except his 3rd Co who were dispatched to LIAOHO from the Ind Regt stationed at HULIN. Prevailing wind was from the south.
