ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4336

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0034)　21 October 1950

Land and property owned by the PW family were confiscated by the Communist Party members in MANCHURIA, and they finally fled to NK. PW willingly volunteered all information but he had a tendency to exaggerate the distance and measurements. Relibility - good.

10 Apr 37 - PW was born in PATUTS’UN(八道村), YENCHI Province, MANCHURIA.

28 Dec 41 - He graduated the Primary School at PATUTS’UN

18 Dec 41 - PW graduated the YENCHI Industrial School in YENCHI, MANCHURIA.

14 May 46 - He was employed at the Primary School in HACHIDOSON as a school teacher.

31 Dec 46 - PW finally possessed 12,000 ‘tsubo’ of farmland in YENCHI Province and it was all confiscated, except for 1,100 tsubo, by the Communist Government. PW was discharged from the school under accusation of maintaining capitalistic ideals.

5 Oct 47 - PW was engaged in farming but the Communist Party members made life miserable for him and he was forced to flee to North Korea.

13 Jan 48 - He crossed over the frozen YALU River and arrived at his sister’s home PURYONG (富寧), North KOREA.

6 Mar 49 - He was drafted into the NKA and PURYONG.

YENCHI, MANCHURIA

Observation - PW enrolled at the YENCHI Industrial School in YENCHI during March 1942 and graduated on 18 Dec 45. He visited the city of YENCHI during Jan 49 for a period of 1 week and his last observations were on 5-6 Oct. 47

Layout of City - PW drew a memory sketch of the city of YENCHI, which attached to this report. The points on the sketch are listed and described as follows:

Point 1 - YENCHI RR Station (延吉駅)

Point 2 - Underground Ammunition Storage(火茶倉庫). It was located on the side of a low mountain 2km South of YENCHI RR station. 10 one-story brick buildings 6m x 10m x 3m with gabled, tile, roofs were located near the underground storage. PW was employed here for a period of 10 days during April 45 polishing and painting artillery shells for the Japanese army.

Point 3 - Korean Volunteer Army Hq (義勇軍總司令部). A three-story brick building 35m × 50m × 12m with flat, concrete roof. It was located 500m east of YENKI RR station.

Point 4 - Army Barracks (兵事部). A one-story brick building 7m × 20m × 4m with gabled, tiled roof. It was located 500m east of the YENCHI RR station and across the street from the Korean Volunteer Army Hq. This building was formerly used by the Japanese Army as a draft board office.

Point 5 - YENCHI Industrial School. (工業学校) It was located 550m east of YENCHI RR station.

Point 6 - Electric Power Sub-Station (電氣派出所). A two-story brick building 12m × 24m × 8m with flat, concrete roof, located 950 meters east of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 7 - Barracks. Approximately 18 one-story brick buildings 12m × 20m × 4m with gabled, tile, roofs were located 1,200 m SE of YENCHI RR Station. Volunteer Korean Army were quartered here.

Point 8 - Meteorological Station (氣溫速度所) A two-story concrete building 5m × 5m × 10m with flat, concrete roof. It was located 900m ENE of YENCHI RR station. PW observed weather balloons being released from this station.

Point 9 - Japanese Police School (日本警察學校) A one-stroy brick building 12m × 30m x 4m with gabled, tile roof. It was located 900 m ENE of YENCHI RR station and across a narrow street north of the meteorological station.

Point 10 - Court House and Police Station (派出所) Three large brick buildings were located within a brick enclosure 130m ×200m and it was and it was located 950 m ENE of YENCHI RR station

Point 11 - Rice Mill (精米所) A one-story brick building 8m × 8m × 7m with shed-type, corrugated iron roof. It was located 1,050 m ENE of YENCHI RR station.

Point 12 Police Sub-Station, (formerly HUATUNG Shop). (派出所) - A two-story brick building 6m × 6m × 7m was located 1,050 meter NE of YENCHI RR station.

Point 13 - Girls’ High School (女子中學校). A two-story brick and concrete plastered building, 24m × 60m × 8m with gabled, tile roof was located 1,000 m NE of YENCHI RR station

Point 14 - Alcohol Plant (酒精工場) A two-story concrete building 30m x 30m x 10m was located 900m north of YENCHI RR station.

Point 15 - Ex-Japanese Construction Office (建築社). A two-story concrete building 15m x 35m x 8m with gabled, tiled roof was located 1,200 m ENE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 16 - Transformer Station (變電所). A two-story brick building 7m x 10m x 7m with gabled, tiled roof was located 1,200m ENE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 17 - Normal School (師乾學校).) was located 1½ km ENE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 18 - Sawmill (製材所) was located 1½km ENE of YENCHI RR Station and adjacent to the normal school.

Point 19 - ‘Geta’ Wood Clog Plant (下駄工場) was located 1,300m ENE of YENCHI RR Station and immediately east of the sawmill.

Point 20 - Farming Implement Manufacturing Plant (Noguchi) (金物工場) was located 1,800m ENE of YENCHI RR Station and across the street north of the wood clog plant.

Point 21 - Army hospital (陸軍病院). A two-story brick and concrete plastered building 30m x 60m x 8m with gabled title roof. It was located 1,300m NE of YENCHI RR Station. The construction of this building was started by the Japanese as a hotel and it was completed in 1946 as a hospital.

Point 22 - National History (國立病院) A two-story brick building 20m x 30m x 8m with gabled, tiled roof. It was located 1,500m NE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 23 - Public Safety Office (公安処). A two-story brick building 20m x 30m x 8m with NE of YENCHI RR Station. It was located 2km NE of YENCHI RR Station. This building was formerly used by Japanese Army as a Military Police Station.

Point 24 - No.2 High School (中學校). A two-story brick building was located across the street east of the Public Safety Office.

Point 25 - Electric Power Control Office (電業合社). A two-story brick building 12m x 25m x 8m with gabled, tiled roof. It was located 2km NE of YENCHI RR Station and immediately north of No. 2 High School.

Point 26 - Bus Station (自動車停留所) located 2,050m NNE of YENCHI RR Station. PW normally observed 15 to 28 passenger buses parked here.

Point 27 - Hotel (旅館). A two-story brick building 8m x 8m x 7½m with gabled, tiled roof. It was located 2,100m NNE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 28 - Wheat Gluten Factory (飴工場) A one-story wooden building 5m x 10m x 3m with gabled, straw roof, located 2,300 m NNE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 29 - Finance and Loan Co (金融組合) A one-story concrete building 20m x 40m x 10m with gabled, tiled, roof. It was located 2,400m NNE of YENCHI RR Station

Point 30 - Central Bank (中央銀行) A two-story concrete building 20m x 40m x 10m with gabled, tiled roof. It was located 2,700 m NNE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 31 - Primary School (國民學校). It was located immediately east of the Central Bank.

Point 32 - Toilet Tissue Manufacturing Plant. It was located 2,900m NNE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 33 - West Parade Ground (西廣場) NNE of YENCHI RR Station. An open area 200m x 200m was located 2,300m NNE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 34 - TOA Newspaper Co (新聞社). A one-story brick building 6m x 8m x 3m with gabled, corrugated iron roof was located 2,400m NNE of YENCHI RR Station

Point 35 - Trucking Co. A one-story brick building 10m x 10m x 7m with gabled, corrugated iron roof was located 2,600m NNE of YENCHI RR Station. PW normally observed four 2½ ten trucks parked here.

Point 36 - TOKO Bank (東興銀行) A one-story brick building 10m x 10m x 7m with gabled, tiled roof was located 2,900m NNE of YENCHI RR Station

Point 37 - Ex-Japanese Special Intelligence Office. A one-story brick building 8m x 13m x 4m with gabled, corrugated iron roof was located 2,900 NNE of YENCHI RR Station

Point 38 - Postoffice (郵便局) A two-story “L” shaped brick building with gabled, tiled roof was located 3,200m NE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 39 - Radio Broadcasting Station (放送局) was located 3,250m NE of YENCHI RR Station and 40m east of the postoffice.

Point 40 - Chinese Buddhist Temple (中國寺院) was located 4km ENE of YENCHI RR Station and 150m North of HAILAN River.

Point 41 - Chinese Market Place (中國市場) was located 3½km ENE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 42 - Prefectural Official, a three-story brick building 20m × 50m × 12m with gabled, tiled roof was located 3,800 m NE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 43 - Government Office Building (政廳) was located across the street east of the Prefectural Office.

Point 44 YEHCHI Airfield (飛行場)

Observation - PW was employed cutting grass on the A/F for a period of 1 week during Aug 44.

Location - It was located 5 km NE of YENCHI RR Station and 2km north of the HAILAN River.

Dimension - The airfield was 1,000m x 1,500m and it was rectangular in shape

Runways and surface - One E-W asphalt runway was located in the middle of the airfield. (PW was unable to estimate size but observed 2 fighter taxing side by side.)

A concrete taxi-stripe was located 50m south and parallel with the runway. (Size unknown) The airfield surface was level and covered with grass.

Three H-S asphalt aprons connected the three hangars and the runway.

Access - One dirt road 6m wide concreted the airfield and the city of YENCHI.

Buildings - Three wooden hangars with gabled, corrugated iron roofs were located on the NW corner of the airfield. Approximately the brick barracks were located on the NW corner of the airfield and behind the three hangars.

Aircraft Dispersal Points:

PW normally observed aircraft parked in front of the hangars. He also observed several camouflaged blast pens west of the hangars.

Obstructions:

A low mountain was located immediately north of the airfield but it did not constitute an obstruction to flying.

Technical Facilities:

A windsock was observed in front of the hangars. Other details are unknown.

Aircraft - PW observed 10 Japanese fighters parked inside of the hangars and also on the aprons. (Aug 44)

Point 45 - Chinese Primary School (中國小學校). A one-story wooden building 12 m x 25 m x 4 m with gabled, tiled roof, was located 4,200m NE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 46 - National Girls’ High School (國立女子中學校). A one-story building 12m x 25m x 4m with gabled, tiled roof, was located 4,100m NE of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 47 - Underground Ammunition Storage(地上茶車倉庫). It was located on a low mountain. 5,000 m NNE of YENCHI RR Station. Six (6) one-story brick building 7m x 10m x 3 1/2m with gabled, tile roofs were located 400 m south of the underground storage and gun powder was kept in these buildings. PW was employed constructing dirt revetments around these powder magazines during Oct 43.

Point 48 - Liberation Army Barracks (義勇軍兵舍). A large number of brick barracks were located over a large area 4,000m North of YENCHI RR Station. The troops were composed of Koreans and Manchurians and they were supervised by the 8th Route Army CCF.

Point 49 - Water Reservoir (貯水池) was located 3,000 NW of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 50 - Park (公園) was located 2,700m NW of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 51 - Brewery (釀造場). Three adobe buildings were surrounded by an adobe fence and were located 5,500m NW of YENCHI RR Station. 80% of the “PIYAJU” (Manchurian wine) consumed in YENCHI was produced here.

Point 52 - Brick Factory (練瓦工場 ). It was located 5,400m NW of YENCHI RR Station. And across the road south of the brewery. 40% of the bricks used in YENCHI were produced here.

Point 53 - YENCHI Higher Middle School (中學校). A one-story “L” shaped brick building was located 3,000 NW of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 54 - Ice Storage (氷庫). Two one-story brick and concrete plastered building 12m × 20m × 4 1/2m with gabled, tile roofs, were 2,500 NNW of YENCHI RR Station. Ice blocks obtained from the river were stored here.

Point 55 - Market Place (市場) was located 2,700m north of YENCHI RR Station.

Point 56 - HAICHENG (海星) Primary School - One-story brick building was located 3,500m north of YENCHI RR Station.
