2. ASSESMMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely. Although he had traveled widely throughout CHINA, he lacked details and was not too observing.

Chronology:
20 Dec 26: PW was born near YENCHI (延吉).
Dec 44: PW graduated primary school at YENCHI. After graduation PW was engaged in farming.
10 Mar 48: PW was inducted into the Manchurian Peoples’ Army at YENCHI. He was assigned to the 1st RR Maintenance Div. PW 26th Bn was assigned the task of repairing the RR bridge spanning the SUNGARI river in CHILIN.
Nov 48: The Bn completed the repair of the CHILIN Bridge and was ordered to TIENTSING to repair the RR track which the Nationalist Chinese Army had destroyed. 65 km of tracks between TIENTSING and the YANGTZE River was repaired by the PW RR Repair Bn.
Apr 49: The Bn was sent to repair the PIEPING to HANK’OU (漢口) RR.
Jun 49: The 1st Div crossed the YANGTZE and went to YOYANG (岳陽). The Div rested here, because of the extremely hot climate.
Aug 49: The 26th Bn started to repair the RR around YOYANG. By Dec 49 all bridges and tracks in this area were completed. All bridges were permanently repaired with structural steel.
Dec 49: The 1st Div enlarged the locomotive repair shop at HENGYANG (衡陽).
10 Jun 50: All Koreans in the 1st RR Maintenance Div left HENGYANG by train.
26 Jun 50: PW arrived in P’YONGYANG.

Unit:
1st RR Maintenance Div of the CCF was composed of the following subordinate units:
1. 22nd and 26th Track Repair Bn with about 2,000 in each battalion.
2. RR bridge repair Bn with 2,000 men.
3. Service unit handled supply and transportation.
4. Guard unit with about 1,000 troops.
5. Technical unit composed of 200 men with technical skills, such as machinery operators.

Equipment:
1. 4 x steam-powered pile drivers in the bridge repair Bn.
2. No other construction machinery was used. Heavy structural steal for bridges was emplaced by hand powered winches.

3. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
1. All bridge and RR repair in CHINA and MANCHURIA was done by the Army.
2. In repairing bridges generally a temporary wooden bridge was constructed, then permanent repairs on the steel bridge were made.
3. As of Dec 49 all RR and bridges in CHINA which were destroyed by the Chinese Nationalist troops were repaired and RR traffic was in full operation.
4. In the 1st RR Repair Div Hq there were 10 Russian engineers. Before traffic was allowed on the repaired roads these Russians had to give their approval.
5. PW heard that most of the structural steel used for bridge construction was from RUSSIA. In 1950 PW saw for the first time new RR rails which he heard were manufactured in HARBIN.
6. All rolling stock used in CHINA are US made, which the communists have repaired after they were supposedly destroyed by the Nationalist Army.
