FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0041) 22 October 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but his intelligence was comparatively low. He repeatedly confused dates and locations and his memory proved very poor. Reliability poor.

Chronology:
Mar 44: PW moved from South KOREA to HULIN, MANCHURIA and was employed at a logging camp.
Aug 45: PW moved to a farming village and was engaged in farming near HULIN.
Dec 46: He moved out of HULIN and arrived in TUNGKINGCHENG. PW was employed as RR worker in the general area of TUNGKINGCHENG.
Mar 48: He was drafted by the CCF as a litter bearer at KAIYUAN.
Oct 48: PW was dispatched to CHINCHOU (錦州) near the Chinese-Manchurian border, as a litter bearer but the war terminated and he was transferred to road maintenance and RR stevedoring.
20 May 50: PW was drafted with a group of 300 laborers and they departed with approximately 1,200 horses. This group of Korean laborers followed the 7th Div NKA>

KAIYUAN Airfield:
Observation Sep 48
PW was dispatched to an area immediately east of KAIYUAN Airfield as litter bearer and he observed the airfield 3 times during Sep 48 while hauling wounded 8th Route Army soldiers around the south side of the airfield to the hospital located 800 m east of KAIYUAN RR station.
Location:
The airfield was located 1.5 km east of KAIYUAN RR station and a low mountain was located immediately west of the airfield. A small farm village was located 3 km south of the airfield.

TACTICAL INFORMATION
Dimensions:
Estimated length and width - 700 m x 1,500m.
Approximate shape - Rectangular. The airfield was surrounded by a barbed wire fence 4 m high.
Runways - Three (3) N-S concrete runways were located in the center of the airfield (dimension unknown).
Aprons - Three (3) concrete aprons connected the three (3) hangars and the runways.
Taxi-strips - A concrete strip connected the 3 runways along the south end of the airfield.
Airfield surface - Level surface was covered with grass.
Drainage - A ditch 1 m wide and 1½ m deep was located around the outer extremities of the airfield which connected with a larger ditch loading west from the airfield.
Access - A gravel road 6 m wide joined the airfield and the KAIYUAN RR station.
Hangars - Three (3) corrugated iron hangars with arched roofs were located along the west portion of the airfield (dimension of hangars unknown).
Billots - A large number of brick and concrete plastered barracks were located immediately behind the three (3) hangars.
Hospital - Two (2) x two-story brick and concrete plastered buildings 20 m x 50 m x 8 m with gabled, tiled, roofs were located at a foot of a low mountain 800 m east of KAIYUAN RR station. This hospital was used by the 8th Route Army and the PW observed a large number of Japanese doctors and nurses here.

Aircraft Dispersal Point:
PW observed two (2) single-engine fighters on one of the runways.

Obstructions:
A low mountain 50 m high was located immediately west of the airfield but PW does not believe that it was obstructed to any flight operation.

Technical Facilities:
Radio - An antenna was located on the roof between the hangar and one of the barracks.
Signaling devices: A windsock was located on a pole south of the hangars.

Construction and Improvement:
PW did not observe any new construction or improvements made on the airfield but he believes that it was well cared for.

Administration and Personnel:
Authority - Army.
Personnel Strength: The many barracks which were located behind the hangars were being used by the foot soldiers of the 8th Routh Army.
Flying activity - PW never observed any aircraft in flight while stationed in KAIYUAN.

Aircraft:
PW observed two (2) single-engine aircraft parked on a runway located on the east portion of the airfield. 1 aircraft was similar to a Japanese fighter and the other aircraft was a fighter with the Chinese Nationalist Army marking.

Miscellaneous:
PW was employed at CHIN-CHOU RR Station for a period of one month during Oct-Nov 49. He was detailed to load and unload freight from trains and he observed a large quantity of materiel moving from the north to south on freight trains. Some of the weapons and ammunition observed were as follows:
T-34 tanks - approximately 40
Japanese artillery (size unknown)
7.62mm “MAXIM” M1940 HMG
7.62mm “DEGTYAREV” DP LMG
GAZ-type trucks
Artillery shells and MG shells
