COAL MINES:

Observation: PW observed the coal mines while working as a mine cook, from the period Jan 42 to Aug 45.
Location: The coal mine was located roughly 48 km S of LUNGCHINT’SUN, on the N slope of a mountain separating MANCHURIA from KOREA.
Description: This coal mine was discovered-in 1932 and developed by the Japanese.
The coal vein was located on a slope of a mountain, so the coal was mined by digging horizontal shafts into the side of the mountain. There were 12 such shafts in this mine. Each shaft was equipped with narrow guage tracks. Electric locomotives were installed in two of the shafts while in the other shafts coal lorries were pulled by mules.
The coal mined here was transported 20km to the north by overhead bucket conveyers to the RR running between HOLUNG and LUNG-CHINGT’SUN
PW heard that the coal mined here was high grade bituminous which he heard was suited for manufacture of synthetic oil. As of Aug 45, 144 tons of coal was mined here every 24 hours. Destination of coal was not known.
The mine was operated in three (3) 8 hour shifts with about 1,500 men on each shift. PW believed this mine was operated on the same scale after Chinese Communist domination.
PW heard that the electrical power to this plant was obtained from the SINUIJU Hydro-Electric power Plant in KOREA.
