ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4315

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0040)　22 October 1950

PW was of average intelligence and cooperative. Although he had been in MUKDEN (奉天), MANCHURIA, his knowledge of factory areas was limited to that of a commuter passing those areas.

May 41 - Moved to MUKDEN (奉天), MANCHURIA with uncle, at the age of 14.

Dec 44 - Graduated Primary School in MUKDEN. Employed in small pulp mill.

Feb 47 - Worked in KIMHUN Hospital (capacity 7-8 patients) (formerly known as ISHIKAWA Hospital) as interne apprentice. Worked here until Aug 50.

4 Aug 50 - Koreans in MUKDEN notified by NK officers that 3Sth Parallel was abolished as result of near victory and they may return to home in South KOREA. PW returned but at TAEJON he was inducted into the Volunteer Medical Unit.

Former Aircraft Parts Manufacturing Plant under Reconstruction (formerly known as MANBI Factory (湳備工場)) MUKDEN, MANCHURIA

Location: This plant was located 6 - 8 km E of the South (南) RR Station and 2 km ESE of the old castle.

Dimension: Exact dimension of plant grounds unknown but according to hearsay, its perimeter measured 16 km. The ground itself was enclosed by a brick wall 3 meters high.

This plant was virtually destroyed by bombs in World War II.

The plant has been under re-construction ever since Jun 47, but due to the war between CCF and Chinese Nationalist Army, construction was temporarily suspended. Since then construction had been resumed but much progress could not be made due to shortage of qualified technicians.

The plant was observed from the outside on countless occasions but above information is hearsay.

PW recalled the presence of three smokestacks, the largest measuring 70 meters.

Arsenal (formerly known as CHOHEISHO), MUKDEN

Obs: Aug 50

Location: This plant was located 6 - 8 km E of the South (南) RR Station, 2 km ESE of the old castle, immediately SE of the MANBI Factory.

Dimension: Exact size unknown but the one side observed by the PW which was a brick wall 3 meters high and approx 200 meters in length.

When observed from the outside, smoke was seen coming out of smokestacks (number unknown) which led the PW to believe the plant might be in operation. According to hearsay, artillery shells and swords were manufactured here under Japanese control.

Industrial District (formerly known as TIEHHSI (鐵西)in MUKDEN.

This district of undetermined size was located 31/2 km W of South (南) RR Station. When observed from the distance, columns of smoke were seen rising from the 300 odd smokestacks, and it is understood a good many of the plants were in operation at night. To the best of PW’s knowledge this district was undamaged by the bombing of World War II.

Names of some of the plants when under Japanese control were recalled to have been TOYO Tire (東洋タイマ), TOKYO Electric (東京電氣), FUJIKURA Electric (藤倉電氣).

Monetary System, MUKDEN, MANCHURIA

Up to sometime in 49 (during Chinese Nationalist occupation and part of the CCF occupation) the circulating medium in MUKDEN was the MANCHURIA Bank Note (滿州銀行券) which was exactly the same as that issued during the Japanese occupation. The currency system was standardized with CHINA Proper in 1949 with the issuance of Central Bank Notes (中央銀行券).

PW recalls that when the Manchurian Bank Note was in circulation, the most common denomination was the ¥1,000 note. Since the issuance of the Central Bank Note, the ¥10 note appeared to have been the most common, and the largest denomination seen was the ¥100 note.

Prior to PW departure from MUKDEN, he recalled that a package of 20 Chinese cigarettes was priced at ¥120 in contrast to 20 American cigarettes which cost ¥600-800. Admission for movies in 1950 was ¥10-16.

City Transportation Facilities: MUKDEN, MANCHURIA

Streetcars were operating on all lines established by the Japanese. Many had been reconditioned and cars usually run every 10 minutes during work hours.

This city also had taxi service. On one occasion, 12-13 taxis, all Japanese cars, were observed parked in front of the above RR Station. These taxis were only for the well-to-do class however. The average person rode the horse drawn cart known as YANGCHA which cost ¥1 per km.

For residential districts, water was turned on only between 0500-1100 hours and 1500-2300. Electricity was turned on from 1800-2300 hours.

The city had a gas system, details unknown. There was no restriction on power and light for factories.
