2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was not talkative and hesitated in answering questions. PW seemed unobservant and could not remember or judge distances and directions.
PW worked at the MU-TAN-CH’IANG (牡丹江) RR station for 3 years, but did not have information on the Manchurian RR system.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Mar 35 - Arrived MU-TAN-CH’IANG (牡丹江) at age of 9. Attended Primary School 6 years.
Feb 42 - Employed by the South MANCHURIA RR Co. Worked at MU-TAN-CH’IANG RR Station as a switchman for 3 years.
Sep 45 - Departed MU-TAN-CH’IANG for KOREA on foot.
Oct 45 - Arrived SEOUL.

Locomotive Manufacturing and Repair Plant, MU-TAN-CH’IANG
Plant Identification: This locomotive manufacturing and repair plant was constructed by the Japanese South Manchurian RR Co (南滿州鐵道柇式会社).
Observation: PW observed the plant from a distance of 200 meters on several occasions during Jun 44. PW stated that the plant was restricted to all RR workers other than those employed by the plant and therefore he was not able to enter the plant area.
Location: The plant was located approx 2 km E of the MU-TAN- CHIANG RR station and just S of the RR line which led to SUIFENHO (綏芬河).
Area: The plant area was approx 1,000 x 500 m and not enclosed by any fence.
PW was not able to estimate the number and types of buildings in the area or the number of RR tracks leading to the plant.
Remarks: No further information as to facilities, production or administration of plant after termination of World War II. The plant was not destroyed during World War II.

Airfield at MU-TAN-CH’IANG:
Identification of airfield: This airfield was constructed by the Japanese Army and used mostly for smaller type aircraft.
Observation: PW observed this airfield almost daily from a distance of 10 m during period Mar 35 to Sep 45, from his home. The inside of airfield could not be observed because of a dirt embankment which surrounded the field.
Location: The airfield was located 2 km WNW of the MU-TAN-CH’IANG RR Station just S of the RR line which led to HARBIN and NW of the MU-TAN-CH’IANG Town Area.
Area: The airfield covered an area approx 3,000 meters E/W by 2,000 meters N/S and was enclosed by a dirt embankment 2 meters high. The airfield area was level and covered with grass 20 cm high
Facilities: Number, type or location of runway is unknown. Several, exact number unknown, possible hangars with arched roofs were located on the NW portion of the airfield.
Activities and Aircraft: During World War II, Japanese single engine air-cooled aircraft with conventional type landing gears, which were said to be reconnaissance planes used this field almost daily.
Biplanes trainers were also frequently observed taking off from this field. PW never observed any twin engine aircraft at this field.

4. GENERAL:
This airfield was not destroyed or damaged during World War II. PW stated that there were no aircraft on this field at time of the Japanese surrender in Aug 45.
