FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0291) 12 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Source was prompt in answering questions and appeared to be intelligent & observant. Being a former ROK EM, he tried to help and appeared to be sincere. Information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
6 Mar 51 source and 2 others (all former ROK troops deserted (12th Div, Repl Bn) at CHOHYON-NI (DS 230578) with intention of surrendering and returning to their original ROK unit. They traveled southward for 6 days until they met UN Forces then, voluntarily surrendered at CHONGGUM-NI (DS 205435)

4. MISSION:
Mission of the 12th Div, Repl Bn was to indoctrinate and give political training to all captured ROK troops, then replace their losses with these prisoners, if feeling that they could be trusted and would fight for their (NK) cause.
If they felt that these prisoners were not fully indoctrinated they forwarded them to higher replacement units.

5. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personnel:
12th Div, Repl Bn had a strength of 300 men. 100 men were NKA, performing the duties of Sqd Ldr, Plat Ldr and Co CO, within the Bn. The remaining 200 men were captured ROK troops in the process of receiving communist indoctrination. None of the troops carried arms, except for the Sqd Ldr and Plat Ldr who carried either PPSH SMG or Russian rifles.

b. Withdrawal:
6 Mar 51, while the Repl Bn was preparing to retreat to TSUNDAN (4 km S of KUZOP) (DS 237682) from CHOHYON-NI (DS 230578) where they were located, source deserted.

c. Disposition:
While in CHOHYON-NI 4 Mar 51 source carried wounded to KUZOP (DS 237682). There he observed the V Corps field hospital and the 12th Div hq.

d. CCF:
O/a 28 Feb 51 during his trips to KUZOP, observed an estimated 500 CCF troops at CHUNDANG-NI (DS 255623) with 21 x 122mm howitzers (pulled by 8 horses) and 50 pack horses carrying artillery ammo, moving northward. It was learned from his plat 1dr that CCF troops were going in the rear to rest.

e. Other Units:
2 Mar 51 observed the 1st Regt Hq of the 12th Div resting vic 2 km S of CHOHYON-NI. They were equipped with 2 x 81mm mortars and 4 HMG.
Learned from a soldier from the 1st Regt 2 Mar 51 that the 7th Div was in front of the 12th Div and at present engaged US units.
10 Mar 51 at MAIL-LI (DS 215571) observed an estimated 700 men from 7th Div engaged in battle.

f. Intention:
Heard from his plat 1dr 1 Mar 51 that the 12th Div was not retreating, but intentionally withdrawing to draw the UN troops into a pocket so that they easily could cut them off by surrounding them and severing HSR.

g. Food:
Sufficient. Troops fed rice two times a day.

h. Morale:
Low, because majority of them were former ROK forced into the NKA.

i. Physical Condition:
Healthy

j. Mine Field:
O/a 4 Mar 51 observed 50 land mines (square wooden box 1’ x 1’ x 6ⁿ) piled on side of road at PODOLKOL (Phonetic. Between YUNDO-NI (DS 250590) and CHOHYON-NI), covered with canvas.
