FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0284) 11 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative in answering questions and information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Source escaped on the night of 7 Mar 51 from the 13th Regt, 6th Div at DS275487 and surrendered while the Regt engaged UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Source, a former soldier of the ROK 8th Div, 21st Regt, 3d Bn, 10th Co, 2d Plat was captured 1 Dec 50 at YONGWON, by the CCF and turned over to the NK 6th Div Trng Unit 5 Dec 50 when the 6th Div came to YONGWON.
O/a 7 Dec 50 source was assigned to the 6th Div, 13th Regt as an ammo bearer. O/a 26 Dec 50 source was transferred to 2d Bn Medics at YANGDOK.
O/a 4 Jan 51 the 13th Regt encountered the UN Forces, N of WONJU; therefore, the 13th Regt retreated N to CHUDONG-NI (DS1549). At CHUDONG-NI the 13th Regt dug air raid shelters at the foot of a Mt and rested there until 7 Feb 51 when they moved into the vic of ANHUNG-NI 20 Feb 51, where they encountered UN Forces.
O/a 3 Mar 51 the 13th Regt retreated to vic of HAGOMUNNAE (DS286486). After arriving here o/a 4 Mar 51 they again encountered UN Forces.
On the night of 7 Mar 51, source deserted while 2d Bn was engaged with UN Forces.

b. Disposition:
When source deserted, the 13th Regt CP was 2 km N of 2d Bn area which was in vic of HYONCHON (DS275495).
1st Bn of 13th Regt, 6th Div was on the W flank of the 2d Bn and 3d Bn was in reserve with the 13th Regt CP.

c. Organization & Strength:
2d Bn of 13th Regt had the 4th (40 men), 5th (40 men) and 6th (20 men) Co, HMG Co (30 men), Mortar Co (30 men), AT Rifle Plat (20 men), Medics Plat (4 men), Mess Plat (15 men), and Comm Plat (20 men).
Strength of 2d Bn and its attached units was between 250 and 300 men.

d. Weapons:
Weapons of 2d Bn of 13th Regt: 4x82mm mortars with approx 5 rd each, 1 US water cooled LMG, 6 Jap make LMG, 2-3 Soviet make LMG, 1 AT Rifle with 30 rd, 2 US Rocket Launchers “Bazooka” and, each soldier, except those in the Comm and Medics Plat, had various types of rifles with 70 to 100 rd and, 5 to 6 hand grenades. Approx 15 AT handgrenades were observed in the AT Rifle Plat. Majority of the officers in the 13th Regt spoke Chinese.

e. Ammo Supply:
Believes that the ammo dump was at the Regt CP area. Ox carts are used for transportation.

f. Food Supply:
Insufficient; obtained from villages.

g. Clothing:
All troops were in winter uniform.

h. Physical Condition:
Poor because of insufficient sleep and food.
Contagious Disease: 5 to 6 men in 2d Bn were suffering from an unk disease. It was said that high fever was caused from lice bites.

i. Morale:
Low, because of heavy air and arty bombardment.

j. Personalities:
PAK, Sun Jin (25), Sr Lt, Med Plat Ldr.
