1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Willing to offer information without any fear. Information seems reliable, although limited.
3. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
2300 hr 3 March 51, PW and 8 other former ROK troops deserted at 500 meters N of place of capture (DS283403) and surrendered to UN 9th RCT at 283403, 0500 hr 4 Mar 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
1 Jan 51 captured by CCF unit (est strength 200) with 11 other ROK (from ROK 2d Div, 31st Regt, 2d Bn, 1st Co) at MEBONG-SAN (Hill 1465) near KAPYONG. 2 Jan 51 observed 360 prisoners (ROKA) at foot of hill 1465 (MEBONG-SAN) 10 km N of KAPYONG. 4 Jan 51 this group and PW group arrived at a mt village 8 km NW of HWACHON escorted by 10 CCF guards. After being divided into two groups of 180 PW each, they were turned over to NK 5th Corps and attached to Replacement Regt, 2d Bn, 7th Co, 3d Plat. PW group stayed there until 10 Jan 51. Then taken to 4 km SW of HONGCHON and received Communist indoctrination courses, averaging 5 hr per day, until mid Feb 51. Then 150 were taken to 28 km SE and turned over to NK 6th Div and attached to Training Bn (est strength 260). Bn stayed there 5 days until 20 Feb 51, whereas normal training course is 20 days, because of an acute shortage of replacements. Bn was taken to 8 km E of there. 50% of Bn were given 2 mortar shells (60mm?) each, and remainder were given Russian rifle ammo and were taken to NK 6th Div, 15th Regt, as replacements, arriving at front line 23 Feb 51 20 km N of DS263403.

b. Strength:
When PW joined 3d Plat. its strength was 11 men, with 3 SMG, 3 US M-1, and 4 Russian rifles, and 6 new replacements (including PW) unarmed. The Co strength was 54.

c. Weapons:
2d Bn: 3 LMG (500 rd each), 3 mortars (60mm?) (15 rd each).

d. Disposition:
1 Mar 51 heard from his friend, an assistant sqd ldr of 2d Bn, HMG Co, that 12th Div was on its right flank and that only 2 Bn were left as result of UN Counter offensive.
1 Mar 51 heard from assistant Co CO that CCF unit was on its left flank.
3 Mar 51 2d Bn was last observed digging in slope of a hill 1,000 meters N of DS 263403.
17 Feb 51 observed 700 CCF troops marching northward at night near HONGCHON.

e. Clothing:
All were winter clothing.

f. Food:
2 meals, insufficient.

g. Physical Condition:
Poor because of under-nourishment and overwork.

h. Morale:
Fair due to belief they will win in the end.
