FIELD REPORT (24 DIV LDI - 0249) 19 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Captured by elements of 2d Bn, 5th RCT. During interrogation PW was in good physical condition. Cooperative, but of below average intelligence. Information should be assessed accordingly. PW served 6 years in the CNA. Not recommended for further interrogation.

2. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted by the CCF o/a May 50. Assigned to 9th Army Group Hq, Guard Co. 9th Army Group left CHINA in Dec 50 and crossed the YALU River at MANPLOJIN o.a 15 Dec 50. After 4 days march 9th Army Group Corps arrived KANGYE. Here the 9th Army Group CP was located for approx 15 days. O/a 3 Jan 51, Group left KANGYE and proceeded S. O/a 18 Jan 51 arrived YONGHUN. O/a 12 Feb 51 a Bn strength (approx 900 men) from 9th Army Group was transferred as replacements to the 26th Army which just arrived at YONGHUN from SOBAEK-SAN (phonetic) where they had engaged UN Forces. The 900 men were distributed to various units of the 26th Army. PW was assigned to his present unit at this time. O/a 15 Feb 51, 226th Regt departed YONGHUN and arrived YONGCHON o/a 25 Feb. 3d Bn remained in YONGCHON while the 226th Regt CP was approx 8km ■ of YONGCHON. O/a 13 Mar 51 3d Bn departed YONGCHON and crossed the 38th parallel. O/a 15 Mar 51 the 8th Co separated from 3d Bn and took a different route S. Believes that the 3d Bn also proceeded S. 8th Co arrived vic place of capture o/a 16 Mar 51 and occupied position which was formerly dug by other CCF unit (presumably the 38th Army). Upon arrival on mountain, a sqd of 11 men from HMG Co was already in position. O/a 191100 Mar 51 PW Position was attacked and o/a 191200 Mar 51 8th Co was overrun and disorganized. Being a litter bearer, PW had no weapon. Surrendered when fighting quieted down.

b. PW Unit:
4th Field Army composed of 9th Army Group and 3 other Army Groups. 26th Army is under 9th Army Group. 26th Army consists of 76th, 77th and 78th div. 76th div composed of 226th Regt and 2 other regt. Code of PW unit is as follows: 76th Div - 1st Bn; 226th Regt - 1st Co; 3d Bn - 3d Sqd; 8th Co - 8th plat.

e. Intentions:
8th Co was to hold their position at all cost. O/a 16 Mar 51 heard from Spd Ldr that the 26th Army is to relieve the 38th Army.

f. Food & Ammo:
Food was limited to 2 meals per day. O/a 13 Mar 51 each man received 80 rd of S/A ammo.

g. Other Units:
18 Mar 51 heard from company cook that elements of 39th Army were on Hill 624 CS 587779.

h. Morale:
Morale among troops is low due to lack of food and cold weather.

I. UN PW:
Observed 6 US PW approx 3 months ago.

j. Replacements:
Heard that replacements were on their way, but none have arrived as yet.

k. Broadcast:
On 17 Mar 51 heard plane broadcast but was not able to hear clearly due to strong wind.
