2. ASSESSMENT:
Deserted 111900 Mar 51 vic CS 644729 and was picked up by 3d Bn, 21t RCT 150800 Mar 51. In good physical condition at interrogation. Cooperative. Information considered fairly reliable. Served with CNA for 5 yr as arty man and held rank of Superior Pvt. Recommended for further interrogation. Spoke fair Japanese.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Composition:
1st, 2d and 5th Independent Arty Div are attached to the 4th Field Army. 1st Arty Div code name “LIUERH”(61). Composed of 25th, 26th and 27th Arty Regt. 27th Arty Regt is also known as “CHIUII” (91) and is composed of 3 Arty Bn, Guard Co and AAA Btry. 3d Arty Bn consist of 3 Arty Btry (7th, 8th & 9th) 9th Btry is composed of 2 Arty plat and OP Plat. Each plat composed of 2 gun crews and 2 stable sqd.

d. Mission:
To give arty support to units under command of 4th Field Army. 9 Feb 7th and 9th Btry received orders to support elements of 38th Army.

e. Location:
7th and 9th Btry, 3d Bn arrived vic Hill 1157 5 Mar 51 with 4 x 150mm howitzers per btry. 7 Mar 51 received orders to support units on Hill 1157 however required 6 days to reach high ground and set up gun positions. At this location 9th Btry fired an average of 12 rd per gun into UN positions. 111700 Mar 51, 7th, 9th Btry and personnel of 27th Arty Hq retreated N abandoning all arty pieces and traveled on road running along S bank of PUKHAN River and crossed road on dam CS 610758 112100 Mar 51. Orders were to proceed to TAEGONG-NI CS 6986. Deserted and remained at village 1 km from CS 610758 for 2 days. On 130400 Mar 51 observed 250 Engr and Inf trp of 338th and 339th Regt cross road on dam CS 610758. Prior to crossing the dam these trp demolished bridge CS 639731 and also small bridges on road running along S bank of PUKHAN River.

g. Morale:
Morale very low due to lack of food and constant air and arty bombardment. Also promises made by political leaders and superiors not fulfilled. Treatment accorded to trp not up to expectation.

h. Communication:
Telephone from OP Plat (1 officer, 19 EM) to btry gun positions. Wireless utilized from btry to higher units.

i. Replacement:
Heard daily from political officer until time of desertion that replacements and new weapons were coming, however at time of desertion none had arrived.

j. Chronology:
27th Arty Regt crossed the YALU River 26 Oct 50, 26th Regt crossed 27 Oct 50, 25th Regt crossed on 28 Oct 50 and 47th Regt, 5th Arty Div crossed 1 week later. 1 Arty Bn of each regt of 1st Arty Div remained in MANCHURIA. 27th Arty Regt remained at CHORWON for 1 month. 9th Btry was situated in village 4 hr walk N of CHORWON. 2d Bn Hq was in vic of CHORWON. 3 Feb 51 25th and 26th Arty Regt proceeded S via CHORWON. 27th Regt lost 11 x 150mm How enroute to CHORWON from air strikes and also damaged due to traveling over bad roads. 9 Feb 51 7th, 9th Btry of 3d Bn including 27th Regt Hq departed CHORWON equipped with 4 x 150 How each to support elements of 38th Army. Remaining 5 x 150mm How of 27th Regt was left in CHORWON. 1/3 of the men of 27th Regt served with CNA.

k. Leaflets & Broadcasts:
Observed leaflets on many different occasions. Noticed majority of the trp who have never served with CNA and don’t know the methods of US. laugh and joke about leaflets. 1/3 of his unit served with CNA and desired to surrender. Unable to do so because they are constantly watched. Subject heard broadcast 10 Mar 51 on Hill 1157 and was audible. Reaction appeared to be same as leaflets.
