FIELD REPORT (25 DIV - LDI - 16) 11 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

CAPTURING UNIT: 3d Bn, 35th RCT, 25th Div

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW are in good physical condition. Attitude: cooperative; intelligence: average. PW have three to five years military service, both in the CNA and the CCF. Knowledge of military matters: fair. LU U Ten was selected for interrogation. The other two PW were interrogated for items of information that LU did not have. The three PW are recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Strength:

b. Unit Disposition:
LU heard from a liaison soldier that the 3d Co CP was in the mountains about one kilometer N of the place of capture. Heard this 100400 Mar 51. On the night of 9 Mar 51, the three PW saw the 1st Bn CP located approx two km N of the place of capture.
On the night of 8 Mar 51, the PW heard a signal corps soldier say that he had laid telephone wire from the battalion command post to the division headquarters. The division headquarters was about eight kilometers N of the place of capture.

c. Unit Mission:
Mission of the company was to defend high ground in the vic of capture. Order to defend was issued by the co CO 7 Mar 51.

d. Weapons:
The co had two LMG.

e. Food:
Corn meal and millet were issued twice a day. Rice is taken from the villagers when discovered.

f. Morale:
Poor for the following reasons:
Lack of food
Inadequate clothing
Fear of UN bombing and air attack
No chance to escape

g. Propaganda:
PW have seen the surrender leaflets and have heard the broadcasts. They wanted to surrender, however, never had the opportunity.

h. Maps:
Only the battalion commanders and higher have maps. PW never saw the Co CO carry a map or look at one.

i. Location of Elements of the 4th Field Army:
2 Mar 51 LU heard a deserter from the 40th Army say that the 40th Army was about 50 km to the E. The deserter told LU that the troops of the 40th Army had scattered.

j. Chronology:
PW LU related the following from his military service:
His company was organized in vic YUNAN, CHINA, in May 50. Sometime in Jun 50, his company moved to HANKOW, CHINA, where it was attached to the 53d Army and redesignated the 3d Co, 1st Bn, 7th Regt, 3d Div, 53d Army. In Jun 50, the 3d Div moved to vic SZEPINGKAI, MANCHURIA. At this time he heard his company CO say that the entire 3d Div was moving to MANCHURIA. The unit trained in SZEPINGKAI, MANCHURIA, for about three months (Jul to Oct 50). During the latter part of Nov 50, the 3d Div crossed the YALU River into North KOREA. Heard the company CO say that the entire 53d Army was crossing into KOREA. Five days later the unit arrived in TOKCHON. His bn crossed the 38th Parallel during the early part of Jan 51. The unit rested for 28 days at an unk location just below the 38th Parallel. The unit arrived vic present location about one month ago.
PW state that the current engagement is the first time their unit has been committed in battle. They were in reserve up to the present time.
