1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appears in good physical condition. He was cooperative and gave information readily during interrogation. The limited information seems to be fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW served from Jun 47 until Oct 49 in CNA 53d Army, 30th Div, Engr Bn. Oct 49 30th Div surrendered to CCF at SHENYANG (瀋陽).
Assigned to CCF Indep 208th Army, 593d Regt, 3d Bn, 7th Co, 2d Plat, 2d Sqd.
After receiving 3 months of infantry training in SHENYANG, Indep 208th Army moved to PEIPING (北京) Jan 50. PW was given cultural training for next 6 months.
June 50, Indep 208th Army was redesignated as 66th Army; PW was assigned to 66th Army, 198th Div, 593d Regt, 2d Bn, 5th Co, 2d Plat, 2d Sqd.
Oct 50, 66th Army departed PEIPING by train and arrived ANTUNG (XE1843) Oct 50.
Dec 50, 66th Army crossed YALU River and entered KOREA via SINUIJU.
195th Div crossed river first, followed by 196th and 197th Divisions.
PW travelled with 593d Regt of 198th Div to HONGCHON (DS0272). 593d Regt, after remaining at HONGCHON about a week, moved northward to HWACH’ON (CT7618).
After 25 days, 593d Regt moved southward and arrived Hill 700 (approx 10 km S of HONGCHON) 2 Mar 51. The unit then prepared defensive positions on hill.
120600 Mar 51, PW 5th Co sector was attacked by UN troops. During the battle, PW deserted and surrendered to elements of 1st Marine Div.

b. Location and Activities of Units (as of 12 Mar 51):
PW believes 198th Div Hq was in a village approx 3 km N of Hill 700 as of 12 Mar 51.
592d Regt was on a hill, east flank of 593d Regt as of 12 Mar 51.
594th Regt was approx 4 km N of 593d Regt as of 12 Mar 51.
PW believes that 196th Div was on immediate front (1 km S of 198th Div) as of 7 Mar 51.
197th Div was on east flank (SE) of 198th Div as of 7 Mar 51.

c. T/O & E and Strength of Units:
66th Army: 196th, 197th and 198th Rifle Divisions and Guard Battalion.
198th Div: 592d, 593d and 594th Rifle Regiments and Guard Company.
593d Regt: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Battalions.
2d Battalion: 4th, 5th and 6th Rifle Companies, Heavy Weapons Co (HMG & Mortar).
5th Company: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Platoons.
2d Platoon: 4 Rifle Squads.
Each Sqd had 7 men.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food, although not sufficient; was procured locally. They averaged two meals a day.
Ammo usually recovered from the battlefield. His platoon received 500 rd of small arms ammo 7 Mar 51.

f. Signal:
Field telephone were only used for communication above company level. No other equipment was observed.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Present morale of PW unit was low because of battle fatigue and absence of replacements.

h. UN PW:
7 Mar 51, PW observed 6 US PW in vicinity of Hill 700 (approx 10 km S of HONGCHON).

i. Medical:
No disease observed in his unit. No preventive measures such as inoculations were given.
About ten troops in PW company were suffering from frozen feet. These were sent to the rear for treatment.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW deserted and surrendered voluntarily. Had seen no leaflets.
