FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0266) 8 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, but knowledge of his unit was limited, due to the short length of time in the NKA. Before being captured by the CCF, PW was in ROX 3d Div, 23d Regt, 2d Bn, 7th Co.
Information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
26 Feb 51, source and another former ROK soldier were told by their plat ldr to get some rice from neighboring village. The two men took this opportunity to desert and hid in the hills to avoid detection by the NKA troops. Source found refuge in a farm house and stayed there until he was apprehended by UN troops 7 Mar 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Integration
14 Feb 51, source and 7 other ROK soldiers were captured by CCF in vic of HONGCHON, then were turned over to NKA V Corps political section 18 Feb 51. O/a 22 Feb 51, assigned to unk Div, unk Regt, 2d Bn, 7th Co with 17 other ROK soldiers.

b. Mission
24 Feb 51, the 7th Co, strength approx 150 men, carried rice flour to a NKA unit in vic of HOENGSONG. The flour was sent from CHINA and each man in the Co carried about 40-50 lb. Mission of the NKA unit was to encircle WONJU, supported by CCF units located both at east and west of this NKA unit.

c. T/U & E
7th Co consisted of 7 plat and a strength of 150 men of which, 2/3 were former ROK soldiers. There were approx 20 men to each plat. Only 50 men in the Co had rifles. All former ROK soldiers were not given any weapons.

d. Supply
O/a 1 Mar 51, observed about 100 NKA soldiers with 20 cattle (loaded with food and ammo) retreating northward from SONDAE-GOL (phonetio) (approx 8 km N of SOSA-RI (DS2546). All troops carried rifles.

e. NK Troops
6 Mar 51, observed 7-8 N Korean soldiers in a house at SOSA-RI but these men moved out during the night.

f. Clothing
All troops wore winter clothing.

g. Disease
There were 5-6 men in the 7th Co suffering from an unk type of contagious disease. Plat ldr forbid all men from going to the house where patients were kept for fear of the men contracting the disease.

h. Food
Insufficient

i. Morale
Low, due to lack of food, fatigue and poor physical condition. Also because they were being pushed back by the UN Forces.

j. 4th Phase Operation
PW heard from friends that the NKA was retreating at the present time but will go on the offensive in Apr 51.
