ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 4142　22 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (521 MISDI 0526)　12 March 1951

Cooperative, friendly, and spoke freely. Expressed disgust with NKA and claimed he had not fired a shot even during the attack.

Reliability - good.

2d Co launched an attack 070400 MAR 51. After successfully taking on hill, causing ROK troops to flee, Co CO ordered withdrawal due to causalities and many inoperative PPsh SMG and rifles. (Walking in deep snow in the dark caused many men to slip and fall on the snow. Snow and ice on weapons caused weapons to freeze.) PW stayed behind when company withdrew and surrendered to ROK troops.

8 Sep 50 - Conscripted at SEOUL. Assigned to 31st Div, 1st Regt, 2d Bn, Mortar Co.

3 Nov 50- Retreated and arrived YUWON

18 Nov 50 - 31st Div reorganized.

20 Nov 50 - Division departed YUWON - arrived KARYEJU (CT2692) 040500 Dec 50.

7 Dec 50 - Deserted at MAENGSAN GUN, AECHON MYON, prior to reaching KARYEJU Division’s reaching destination delayed by UN action.

9 Dec 50 - Apprehended by local police while resting in a home with the excuse he had frostbitten feet, and turned over to district office. 2 officers and 9 EM were recuperating from illness.

25 Dec 50 - The 2 officers and 10 EM (including PW) departure AECH’ON MYON.

4 Jan 51 - Arrived KARYEJU and reported to liaison office of II Corps, Personnel Section. 25 soldiers were there who had been left behind by their units.

5 Jan 51- The 2 officers and 35 EM, led by an officer from liaison office, departed KARYEJU for II Corps Hq.

20 Jan 51 - 3 officers and 19 EM (16 men dropped out on way due to illness) arrived II Corps Hq at PUKKIL-TONG (DS450545).

31 Jan 51 - Assigned to Guard Bn, II Corps.

5 Feb 51- Guard Bn (300 men) redesignated Special Bn, 33d Regt, and departure PUKKIL-TONG. Hearsay from Bn 00: main force of 33d Regt was at CHUNCH’ON to pick up winter uniforms- and canvas shoes for II Corps.

11 Feb 51 - Special Bn, 33d Regt, arrived CHINJORI (DS423565) and dug in on hill.

15 Feb 51 - Special Bn, 33d Regt departed CHINJORI.

20 Feb 51 - Arrived TASURI (DS4438).

24 Feb 51 - Arrived MACHA-RI (DS4923). Mission of Bn was to defend the road between PYONGCHANG and YONGWOL until the 27th or until 2d Div arrived, but forced to retreat due to advance by ROK troops.

2 Mar 51 - Arrived SANGARI (DS5471) and joined main body of 33d Regt. Heard that this independent regiment was an NCO Training Unit and also Security Unit of II Corps. Special Bn redesignated the 1st Bn.

5 Mar 51 - 1st Bn departed SANGARI for PAEKCHOK SAN. Heard other 3bn had departed a day or two previously for same place.

6 Mar 51 - 1st Bn arrived PAEKCHOK SAN. Heard from company CO 33d Regt was deployed on this mountain. Heard from fellow soldiers that elements of 27th Div were also located on this mountain.

7 Mar 51- Surrendered after an attack on UN positions.

Following ammo received 4 Mar 51 at SANGARI (80% of Russ rifles replaced with US M-1 rifles):

12 Feb 51, 50 soldiers, formerly with 31st Div, joined 1st Bn. Heard from these troops 31st Div deactivated early Feb 51.

33d Regt together with 27th Div will defend PAEKCHOK SAN- surround and annihilate the ROK troops in the area - and then advance south.

20 Nov 50, regimental CO told regt to be prepared for prolonged war because NKA is not going to just advance south as they did last summer but will carry cut the strategy of encirclement and annihilation of the UN Forces.

CCF will move into the NKA sector from the north and advance towards KANGNUNG. Observed no CCF south of the 38th Parallel.
