3. TACTICAL INFORMATION
a. Chronology
15 Jul 50 Inducted into service at HWANJU and went to NCO training school for one month. Upon graduation PW was appointed Jr Lt and assigned to 104th Security Regt, 21st Bn, 1st Co, 3d Plat as Plat Ldr at SEOUL.
5 Nov 50 Reassigned to II Corps, 9th Div, 3d Regt as liaison officer at YANGU, NK
10 DEC 50 II Corps left YANGU and passed through KUMHWA, CHOLWON, RYONGHON, KAPYONG, HONGCH’ON, HOENGSONG, TAEHWA-RI, and arrived PYONGCHANG 28 Feb 51.
II Corps Hq was established in vicinity of HONENGSONG.
9th Div withdrew from PYONGCHANG as UN Force advanced, and 2d Regt processed defensive position at TAEHWA-RI.
15 Jan 51 Reduced to Sgt and reassigned to 2d Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co as co clark.
4 Mar 51 Deserted and surrendered to 3d Bn, ROK MP, at AMI-DONG.

b. Organization: (Jan 51)
II Corps - Consisted of 9th, 2d, 27th and 31st Div, each with an approx. strength of 2400.
9th Div - Consisted of 4 rifle regt of 500 men each, Comm Bn (150 Men), Engr Bn (150 men), Guard Co (50 men), Med Co (30 men), and Supply Co (100 men).
2nd Regt (9th Div) - Consisted of three rifle bn of 150 men each, Comm Plat (30 men), Engr Plat (50 men), Guard Plat (30 men), Med Plat (20 men), and Supply Plat (25 men).
Regt from Jan-Mar 51 suffered approx 50 casualties.
Each Bn consisted of 3 rifle co and HMG Co.

d. Supplies:
Food: One or two meals per day.
Locally procured, 2days’ emergency rations issued to each mand.
Clothing: Shipment of Russian-made cotton quilted uniforms arrived II Corps 10 Feb 51, 20 Feb, and 25 Feb 51, and 70% of troops received and issue. Makings on inside of jackets were Russian. One pair of Chinese-made canvas shoes was issued to each mand at same time. Those men who did not received uniforms were told next shipments already on way and should arrive in near future.
Ammunition: Each mand was issued 100 rd of rifle ammunition and 2 hand grenades at KAPYONG 25 Dec 50. Reissue of 50 rd and 2 hand grenades was made at TUNNAE-MYON, YU DONG-NI (About 16 km S of HOENGSONG) 20 Jan 51.
Troops were told of transportation difficulties and cautioned to use ammo sparingly.Local villagers are employed for transporting ammo,

g. Mission:
II Corps was to take CHECHON.

h. Morale:
Morale of 2d Regt was low. Troops are more or less forced to fight. Intensive bombing and shelling are major factors of low morale. PW believed propaganda leaflets are not effective when troops are with their units, but quite effective whenever their units were badly beaten and in disorderly retreat.

i. Captured Equipment:
3 captured US rocket, launchers were observed in 2d Regt. No ammunition for them.
Half of troops in 9th Div were believed equipped with captured US M-1 rifles or carbines.

j. UN PW:
At RYONCHONG 15 Dec 50 observed 7 US prisoners being taken to KUMHWA. Were wearing fatigue uniforms. Appeared in good health, and no sign of mistreatment was observed.

k. Night Attack:
(1) PW was not in any night attack, but overheard 1st Co CO giving instructions to men on night attack which was to take place that night. Men to engage in night attack are selected by CO of that particular night attack. Healthy, strong, and stubborn-minded men were chosen.
(2) Men raking night attach are told about it same day and CO advised them to have good sleep. Awaken 2 hours before departure time.
(3) Men are oriented on how to processed to UN position, special pass word to distinguish men from UN Forces and other signals.
Local civilians are employed to spy on UN Forces and acquire information on guards, strength, surrounding terrain etc.
After thorough study of area, the assembly area after attack was selected. Approach UN position in single file. Distance between men 10 meters. Move up mountain passed up to 100 to 200 meters and then deploy. Distance of 10 meters between men maintained constantly.
After each man is in position, they crawl up to within 50 meters of UN Forces and first shot is then fired by leader.
Men all charge as they fire. Every men armed with PPSH SMG, Heavy and light machineguns are employed to assist withdrawal if attack fails. Attack usually takes place 0400 and never on moonlit nights. Dark and cold nights are ideal for attack.
