FIELD REPORT (521 MISDI 0485) 24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:

3. NIGHT ATTACKS:
14 Feb 51 1700 hr , told by sqd ldr they (1st Bn) were going to attack UN position. 1700 hr, sqd ldr, plat ldr, and co CC called by bn runner to report to Bn CO. Prior to the Bn CO request for all 1dr to assemble, a courier on horseback from Regt CP arrived. PW believes the courier carried instructions for the coming night attack.
Sqd ldr returned from Bn CP and told his men they would depart immediately following 1st Co. Told to keep three-four paces between men and to refrain from loud talking and smoking. Each man carried 6 days rice ration (three already boiled). No ammunition carried.
1730 hr 1st Co departed single file, keeping normal interval as instructed by their leaders. An officer with an interpreter used Korean farmers who were familiar with the mountain passes as guides ahead of the 1st Co. Horses were taken with 1st Bn to haul ammo to assembly point. Horses were covered with white cloths.

From assembly area 1st Bn marched single file over mountain passes and narrow open roads. 1900hr 1st Bn lost number of men KIA, WIA due to UN arty harassing fire.
Kept on marching and took cover whenever arty shells landed. Dead and wounded were left on the spot. While marching to line of departure, PW heard heavy arty and machine gun fire (2300 hr) in the distance.
1st Bn arrived line of departure 2400 hr. Line of departure was a gently sloped river bank 1km from UN position.
PW sqd assigned as leading sqd to contact UN Forces. In case of contact signal was to throw hand grenades. Told by sqd ldr other sqd and plat will follow leading sqd at 50-75 yard intervals. Each man in sqd armed with 3-4 grenades, type 38 Jap rifle, and 100 rd of ammo. 1st Bn men told to tie white cloth on left arm as identification.
Leading sqd departed assembly area 0040 hr. For about 200 yd leading sqd advanced in crouched position, taking cover behind bushes and in holes. Began crawling and moving in crouched position 500-600 yd from UN position. Sqd ldr whispered all commands (at this time all men were in open formation). 50 yd from UN position PW could hear the UN Forces talking and moving about. Sqd ldr found at 0200 no unit following his sqd.
After waiting and checking to see that no unit was behind, Sqd began crawling back. UN Forces on ridge adjacent to PW sqd, opened fire with rifles and machine guns. Sqd made way back to rear and told by Bn CO to attack hill where UN fire was coming from.
Sqd advanced on the open slope. PW hit by rifle bullet half way up slope. Observed attack was repulsed.
