FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISDI - 0337) 9 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evacuated through medical channels because of a bullet would in his leg. Cooperative, and information is considered fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Organization and Strength:
44th Ind Arty Regt present strength 2,000 men. 4 security company of 90 men and a supply unit of 70 men are attached. 44th Regt consisted of 3 bn with approx 500 men each, an observation platoon of 20 men, and a telephone platoon of 60 men. Each bn composed of three batteries of Approx 100 men.
8th Arty Div composed of the 44th, 45th and the 46th Arty Regt. 45th and 46th regt were assigned to other units.

b. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
As of Mar 51, the First Bn of the 370th Regt was vic of (CS883565). Four days prior to his capture, PW was told by Bn CO that the 44th Regt CP was at SANGHWAHO (CS877621) and Bn CP with its arty was at HAGWAHO (CS890615).

c. Status of Arms and Ammo:
Each btry had 3 to 4 x 75mm howitzers with 30 rd of ammo each. While in MANCHURIA all their inf guns were rebored and made into 75mm howitzers. Each gun was drawn by 6 to 8 horses. In addition to the howitzers there were 3 LMG in each Btry with approx 200 rd of ammo ea.

d. Chronology:
8th Arty Div crossed the YALU River sometime in Oct 50 via CHIAN, MANCHURIA and MANPOJIN, KOREA. Passed through KANGGYE and HUICHON. Sometime in Dec 50, above the 38th parallel, the 8th Arty Div was divided into regiments and assigned to various armies, the 44th Regt being assigned to the 42d Army. 44th Arty Regt crossed the 38th parallel o/a 1 Jan 51 and arrived KAPYONG o/a 10 Feb 51. Departing, they marched to SANGGWAHO (CS877621) resting for 4 or 5 days. PW, with 2 others from the telephone plat and 2 men from the observation plat, moved to vic of (CS883565) for the purpose of observing and phoning UN positions to arty Btry. Only the 1st Bn of the 370th Regt was in the vic of (CS883565). 071200 Mar, the UN Forces started an offensive and 080800 Mar 51, PW was captured when the UN Forces overran his unit’s position.

e. Mission and Intention:
Heard from his CO, 4 days prior to being capture, that their mission was to hold the present position.

f. Physical Condition of Troops:
Everyone in his regiment was in the best health.

g. Arty Pieces:
Arty pieces were in good working condition and are generally used when an observer spots UN Force concentrations, tanks, or vehicles. Guns are usually placed at the foot of mountains and spaced 7 to 8 meters apart in a line. These are camouflaged with tree leaves and branches. Ammo is kept close to the guns ready for use. Guns are usually not dug in.

The code for the 44th Regt is 63d Unit.
