1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: YANG YU SHEN (楊有生)
PW NO: 1st M-P-4681

UNIT: CCF, 66th Corps, 197th Div, 590th Regt, 3d Bn, HMG Co.
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 5 Mar 51, Vicinity of DS 1352
CAPTURING UNIT: 1st Marines.
EDUCATION: None
INTERROGATOR: Sgt Ando.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW 3d Bn was ordered to defend Hill in vicinity of DS 1352.
Wounded in shoulder two days ago. As American Forces attacked hill, Bn retreated Northward. PW, being unable to move, was captured as he remained in his foxhole. Not recommended for further interrogation. Low intelligence, so interrogation extremely difficult. Gave many conflicting answers.

b. Chronology
Nov 50 - 66th Corps entered KOREA in vicinity of ANTUNG, MANCHURIA. Troops immediately travelled Southward, moving only at night. Fourth Field Army was ahead of 66th Corps. 66th Corps did not engage in any battle above 38th Parallel.
20 Jan 51 - 66th Corps rested 10 days in vicinity of SEOUL. Departed SEOUL and arrived vicinity HONGCHON 19 Feb 51. All three divisions separated. 589th and 591st Regt of 197th Div committed to battle. 590th Regt remained 8 km SE of HONGCHON.
24 Feb 51 - 3d Bn, 590th Regt, departed above position and arrived vicinity of DS 1352 and deployed in defensive positions. PW heard 1st Bn, 590th Regt had also departed from 590th Regt Hq and moved 4 km S as reserve for 3d Bn. 2d Bn was to guard Regt CP.
3 Mar 51 - 3d Bn received artillery barrage and was attacked by Marines the following day.
5 Mar 51 - Since Marine attack intensified, 3d En retreated to hill to the N. PW was captured as he was unable to move because of bullet wound in his shoulder.

c. Weapons and Equipment: 3d Bn: 8 HMG
7 LMG
6 x 60mm mortars
197th Div: 3 x 76mm arty pieces.
590th Regt: 3 x 82mm mortars.
Each men carried four hand grenades.
Telephone communication down to companies.
One wireless transmitter seen at Regt Hq.
About 30 horses utilized by each regt to pull HMG, mortars and ammo supply.

d. Status of Supply:
No additional food, clothing, or ammo supply since entering KOREA. Troops rely on villagers for food.
Ammo status:
About 200 rifle rounds per soldier.
About 20 rd per mortar (60mm and 82mm)
About 2500 rd per HMG.
About 1600 rd per HMG.
Medical facilities for ■…■ wounds. Seriously wounded are carried to the rear by Korean civilians.

e. Other Units:
One CCF Corps was heard to be deployed on W flank of 66th Corps.

f. Foreign Elements:
One NK Corps was heard to be located on E flank of 66th Corps.

g. Morale:
Low. Many do not want to fight but are helplessly doing so in fear.

h. UN weapons:
Troops fear artillery and aircraft attacks most. UN artillery fire has been accurate.

4. GENERAL:
PW was formerly with CNA for three years. Deserted his unit and returned home but was conscripted into CCF in June 50. Education - none. PW cannot read or write. Safe conduct leaflet had no effect on him.
