2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was in good physical condition at interrogation. He was a farmer prior to entering the military service. Cooperative, observant, and of average intelligence. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
I NK Corps composed of the 8th, 17th, and 47th Div.
8th Div composed of the 1st, 2d, 3d Regt, Recon Co, Guard Plat, Engr Bn, and Sig Bn.
PW had knowledge of the following code name:
8th Div - PAEKTU SAN
Recon Co - KANGCHOL
Engr Bn - HWANGSO

1st Regt suffered severe casualties while attempting to counterattack approx 10 km S of the HAN River, in Feb 51.
2d Regt received most of its casualties in vic SURI SAN (CS1436) o/a 7 Feb 51. 3d Regt also received most of its casualties in vic SURI SAN o/a 7 Feb 51.
Each Rifle Regt had 3 HMG, 6 LMG, approx 7 AT Guns (45mm).
Recon Co had 3 LMG, and was armed with SMG, rifles and two hand grenades per man.
There was no heavy equipment in the Engr Bn.
Sig Bn had 1 wireless set and a number of telephones.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
One Plat of the Recon Co was ordered to observe any attempt by UN forces to cross the HAN River in vic BS953825. One Plat of the Recon Co was ordered to cross the HAN River to capture UN personnel, by posing as civilians. 3 Mar 51, heard from his Co CO that the mission of the 8th Div was to defend the NE bank of the HAN River from vic BS963807 to a point 3 km NW of HAENGJU CS0863. Mission of the 17th Div was to defend the North bank of the HAN River from a point 3 km NW of HAENGJU CS0863 to SEOUL. Mission of the 47th Div was to defend the North bank of the HAN River West and East of TUKTO CS2856.

c. Disposition:
6 Mar 51, heard that the 8th Div CP was in TANHYON-NI (CS031734). 9 Mar 51, the Recon Co, 8th Div, was in SONGDONG-NI (BS965846).

d. Communications:
PW Co used telephones and runners. Direction signs with code names on them were used.

f. Morale:
SK conscripted into the NKA were given propaganda lectures to elevate their morale.

g. Chronology:
Conscripted into the NKA 14 Sep 50 at HENGSONG (DS1048), and assigned to a Replacement Bn, 18 Sep 50 at CHUNCHON (CS8893), Bn proceeded to CHORWON (CT4334), TOKCHON (BV6904), TAECHON (YE1322) and arrived PYOKTONG (YE0699) 20 Oct 50. Assigned to his present unit, and received 1½ months’ basic training. 15 Dec 50, 8th Div departed PYOKTONG and arrived SEOUL 6 Jan 51 via UNSAN (YE3927), SINANJU (YD2486), PYONGYANG, SARIWON (YC4065), and KAESONG (BT8604). O/a 10 Jan 51, Div crossed HAN River and arrived at a point 3 km S of HUKSOK-TONG (CS2052). 11 Jan 51, 2d and 3d Regt and the Recon Co proceeded to SUAM-NI (CS125367). O/a 10 Feb 51, 8th Div withdrew to AHYUN DONG, SEOUL City and continued to TANHYON-NI (CS031734), arriving 23 Feb 51. Recon Co continued to SONGDONG-NI (BS965846). 090300 Mar 51, PW and two other soldiers crossed the HAN River vic BS954825 and landed on the south bank of the HAN River vic BS933823. Their mission was to capture UN personnel. PW and the two others hid in a mountain awaiting darkness but were observed by several villagers who notified elements of the ROK Army. Upon seeing that ROK troops were converging on their area, PW came out to surrender, but the two others with him attempted to flee. They were pursued by the ROK troops and killed.

h. Artillery:
O/a 25 Feb 51, PW observed 15-16 ox-drawn guns (presumed to be 45mm AT guns) heading towards TANHYON-NI (CS031734)

i. Medical:
PW unit did not receive any immunizations. Common cold was the most prevalent sickness in unit. Drinking water was obtained from wells and was not purified.

j. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was procured locally and consisted of rice and millet. Ration was 600 – 1,000 grams per man a day.
No ammo supplies received from the rear and was insufficient.

k. Replacements:
PW Co did not receive any replacements. Wounded personnel were sent to the rear for medical treatment, and upon recovering, were sent either to their original units or to other units.

l. Psychological Warfare:
Observed UN leaflets but was doubtful of their contents. Many of the men also observed UN leaflets but skeptical because they were told by the officers that they would be killed if they were captured.

m. Night Bombing:
PW observed two night bombing attacks, once in vic CHONGCHON River and once in vic PYONGYANG, and in both instances the attacks were ineffective.

4. REMARKS:
PW was previously interrogated by the 1st ROK Div.
