1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and sincerely attempted to be helpful. However, he is illiterate and can not even count.
Information should be assessed accordingly.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
After the end of the World War II, PW became one of the 2000 bandits led by HSIEH, Wen Tung (謝文東) who was eventually caught and executed by the CCF 8th Route Army. Most of the bandits were captured in Feb 46 by the 8th Route Army in the MUTANCHIANG area.
PW was immediately placed into the CCF 17th Security Guard Regt where he received no training.
In Jan 47, 17th Sercurity Guard Regt became the 9th Regt at YU SHU HSIEN (兪樹縣). PW was place into the 4th Squad, 2d Plat, HMG Co, 2d Bn, 9th Regt, 3d Div. Received Communist indoctrination for 4 months.
Between May 47 to Sep 50, the CCF 3d Div travelled and battled with the CNA. Places travelled were:
SSUPING (四平)
HSIAN HSIEN (西安縣)
TIEHLING (鐵嶺)
CHANGCHUN (長春)
CHINCHOU (錦州)
HUPEI SHENG (湖北省)
TIEN CHIN (天津)
HUNAN SHENG (湖南省)
HUPEI SHENG (湖北省)
KUANGHSI
and arrived ANTUNG (安東) in Sep 50.
3d Div left ANTUNG in Sep 50 by train and arrived KAIYUAN (開原) in Oct 50. At KAIYUAN the 9th Regt was redesignated the 42d Regt.
3d Div left KAIYUAN in Oct 50 by train and arrived MANPOJIN (BA7259) in Oct 50. 3d Div left MANPOJIN in Oct 50 on foot and arrived KUJANG DONG (BV6571) in early Nov 50.
Left KUJANG DONG on foot in Nov 50 and after travelling through small villages arrived at the place of capture in late Feb 51. Places travelled between KUJANG DONG and the place of capture were unknown.

b. Location and Activities of Units (as of 7 Mar 51)
2d Bn of the 42d Regt was to defend the bridge vicinity (CS5154).
2d Bn Hq was at CS5253 on a mountain located N of the HAN River.

d. Replacements
In late Feb 51, PW heard that 1 Indep Regt came to KOREA from CHINA as replacements for the 3d Div. At times, personnel from the HMG Co were sent to the rifle units to replace losses.

e. Food, Ammo and other Supplies
Did not receive any ammo since he came into KOREA.
Food was procured from villages that they occupied.
No clothing was received by the PW since he came to KOREA but he received a pair of shoes in late Feb 51 near the place of capture.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness
Morale in PW Plat was low since they lacked warm food and clothing.

h. Medical
There was no epidemic in PW Co.
No immunizations or counter-measures received by PW Co since it arrived in KOREA.
There were an unknown number of frozen feet cases in the PW Co. Only iodine was supplied to them.

i. Psychological Warfare
PW surrendered because he believed in the UN leaflets he saw.
Saw leaflets at the area of capture.
Leaflets stated: “When you surrender, take a small road.” “If you surrender we will treat you well.”
“If you do not surrender, you will not be able to see any daylight because you must hide from our planes and artillery.”
“Why are you fighting for RUSSIA?”
Believed the leaflets.
Others believed in the leaflets; that is why his entire platoon surrendered.
