1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative during interrogation but due to his age and limited military service information meager. Information fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted 8 Nov 50 at SAKCHU (XE 7472) and assigned to 47th Division Medical Department where he received 20 days of medical training.
47th Division departed SAKCHU 18 Dec 50, and passed through following places:
KUSONG (XE 9228)
PAKCHON (YD 2099)
ANJU (YD 2988)
PYONGYANG
Vicinity of 38th Parallel (1 Jan 51)
SEOUL
INCH'ON
Transferred to Eng Co, 1st Regt, 8 Feb 51 which was in the vic of INCH'ON (BS 9164).
Eng Co moved to SEOUL 9 Feb 51.
27 Feb 51, 47th Div was in defensive position in the SEOUL - INCHON Area.
He and seven other men from Eng Co departed SEOUL 27 Feb 51 with 8 AT Mines which were to be buried in the HAN River area. Enroute, they discared the mines and proceeded toward the UN lines with intentions of surrendering. While crossing HAN River in a boat, the seven men were killed when fired upon by UN troops. PW only person of the group to survive and be captured.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
1st Regt Hq located on the NAMSAN Hill in SEOUL 27 Feb 51.
47th Division was in defensive positions along the north side of the HAN River.
17th Division was N of 47th Div, and was in defensive positions on the North Bank of the HAN River.
He had heard that the CCF Units in this area were supposed to move eastward, then to attack southward.

I Corps: 8th, 17th and 47th (Code: PAK TALNAMU -박딸나무) Div, Engr Bn, Signal Bn, SMG Bn.
47th Division: 3 Rifle and Artillery Regiments, Engineer Bn, and SMG Bn.
1st Regiment: 3 Rifle Bn, Engr Co, Signal Co, and SMG Co.
Each Rifle Bn: 3 to 4 Rifle Co.
Each Rifle Co: Rifle Plat and HMG Sqd.
Each Rifle Plat: 3 to 4 Rifle Sqd.
Each Rifle Sqd: 6 to 8 men.

In the SEOUL Area there are mines on the north side of the HAN River.
The axis of the mine field is from CS193543 to CS224523. The mine field is between the HAN River and the SEOUL-SUWON Main RR line (200 - 250 meters from RR line).
Other mine fields on roads and road junction leading toward center of town, to wit, at the following locations:
CS 194553 - 14 mines
CS 518543 - 18 mines
CS 214542 - 12 mines
CS 226540 - 14 mines
CS 228541 - 7 mines
Mines buried 10 to 12 meters apart, and in many instances they may be detonated from prepared defensive positions nearby.
Mines Russian Manufacture, constructed of wood, and 6 x 12 x 18 inches in size.

d. Personalities:
PAK, Yong Sok (朴龍錫)(박용석), Col, CO, 1st Regt, 47th Div, formerly with CCF.
KIM, Um (金音)(김음), Capt, CO, Engr Co, 1st Regt Formerly with the CCF.

e. Food, Ammo, and Other Supplies:
Food and ammo supplies transported from SINUIJU (XE 1839) to KAESONG (BT 8505) by trains, then by wagons to the units.
3 meals received daily in sufficient quantity which amounted to a total of 1,200 grams.
1st Regt ammo supply hidden in tunnels at NAMSAN, where Regt Hq was located.

f. Armor, Artillery and Aircraft:
9 x 76 mm Guns and 8 other unk type with muzzle brakes (resembling the 76mm gun) were observed in the Artillery Regiment at SAKCHU. These field pieces appeared to be new. They were not seen after leaving SAKCHU. Artillery, however, was frequently heard firing from area north of SEOUL.

g. Morale:
Morale low due to the troops fear of death. Although food was sufficient, troops were heard complaining because of lack of variety.

h. UN PW:
8 US PW observed being held captive by CCF 12 Feb 51 at INCH'ON (BS 9149). Heard, they were to be sent to CHINA.

i. Signal:
Runners were employed by the engineer Company.
Higher echelon were known to possess telephones.

j. Medical:
A small hospital unit (minor treatment) attached to each regt and div.
I Corps, known to have three Field Hospitals.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered voluntarily because of hardships faced in the NK Army and because he had no faith in a Communist victory.
UN leaflets were seen in SEOUL.
Gist of leaflets was: "Surrender and you will not be mistreated but instead, you will receive good treatment."
He had confidence in the leaflets. Heard no comments among the men in his unit regarding the leaflets.
