FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0215)　26 February 1951

Information limited. However, PW had knowledge of other units. It is mostly hearsay and should be evaluated as such.

Deserted his unit 16 Feb 51 because he was tired of walking and was captured at DS284307 by 9th Inf Patrol 25 Feb 51.

O/a 26 Jan 51 when the 7th Div was situated in the vic of HOENGSONG, heard from a friend in the same outfit that the 11th Div of the V Corps was on the outskirts of HOENGSONG.

11th Div, often called the KUNUI Div, is an outstanding Div of the NKA and each man of this unit was awarded a meritorious medal and the honor of the title “KUNUI”. The title of “KUNUI” (Guards) is not only awarded to an outstanding individual but to a whole Div, whole Regt and whole Bn. 11th Div, 18th Regt (4th Div) and 303d Tank Bn are the units with this honor. The title of “KUNUI” (Guards) is awarded by the Cabinet Members of the Home Ministry and these units cannot be deactivated or organized into other units. Even the troops cannot be assigned to other units without special authority. Duties of the “KUNUI UNITS” are the same as any other units, but they are usually assigned to secure large captured enemy cities.

It was heard from Co CO that the present V Corps CG was the former 11th Div CG.

PW formerly in the 38th Div, and when it was deactivated observed all the staff officers and officers, holding key positions within the 38th Div, leaving for V Corps Hq. PW Co CO was in this group of 40 officers and just before his departure, stated that all the officers were going to V Corps Hq as a training unit to train and organize a new Div with captured ROK troops.

O/a 11 Feb 51, heard from the ass’t Co CO that the 46th CCF Army was North of HOENGSONG and preparing for their 4th Phase Offensive which is scheduled to commence 1 Mar 51.

When PW deserted his unit on 16 Feb 51, the 7th Div was headed north. At that time, each Co had only 50-60 men. Weapons: (7th Div, 2d Regt, 1st Bn) 2-3 LMG to ea Bn (1,500 rd ea), 4 x 82mm Mortars (50% of troops in Bn carried 3 rd ea), 4 x 60mm Mortars (50% of troops in Bn carried 5 rd each). All armed with either PPSH SMG (200 rd ea) Carbine (300 rd ea) or Rifles (300 rd ea for rifles and 200 rd ea for LMG).

20 men out of PW Bn had typhus. No medicine or medical treatment available. Men left to die.

Insufficient. Many complaints among troops.

All wore winter uniforms.

Low among troops because of lack of food, continuous marching, interrupted sleep, fear of air and arty bombardment, always hiding in the hills and forced to carry hvy load of ammo.
