FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI 0312) 25 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative and answered questions willingly. However, information limited.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
PW in CNA during Feb 47 to Sep 48. O/a 27 Sep 48 PW captured by CCF at CHINJOU and assigned to the 42d Army, 126th Div, 377th Regt, 1st Bn, MG Co, 2d Co, 6th Sqd. O/a 17 Oct 50 377th Regt crossed the YALU River into KOREA.
O/a 4 Feb 51 Regt headed for TAEHUNG-NI (CS723491) and arrived there 6 Feb 51. Remained here for 7 days preparing a defensive line. 13 Feb 51 attacked UN Forces approx 3 Km E of CHIPYONG-NI. Regt could not overcome them in the first attempt, withdrew once, and again on the next night they attacked with the support of the troops 38th, 39th, and 40th Armies. However, after many casualties troops were broken and were forced to retreat to the nearest mountains. PW Regt disintegrated at the time and only the 1st Bn of his Regt managed to retreat up to TAEHUNG-NI 15 Feb 51. 17 Feb 51 upon recovery of the Regt strength, the 377th Regt and 378th Regt attacked the UN Forces at a point approx 20 Km N of TAEHUNG-NI. This offensive was attempted in order to hold their defensive lines until reinforcements arrived. During this fire fight the Regt received orders from their advisors to fight to the end and not to withdraw. However the Regt did not receive reinforcements for five days and UN attacks from air and ground increased. Finally they were forced to retreat. During this retreat PW was captured by elements of UN Forces vicinity of Hill 469 (CS812548) 221500 Feb 51.

b. Organization and Strength
Prior to PW separation from his unit the strength of the 377th Regt and 378th Regt was approx 200 men each.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit
Only knew that Regt (377th and 378th) were retreating north-west. Believes that men in these Regt were probably captured or killed.

d. Deployment of Other Units
During the fire fight at CHIPYONG-NI 13 Feb - 14 Feb 51, observed troops of the 38th and 39th Army.

e. Status of Arms and Ammunition

No resupply of arms and ammo was seen while in the combat zone.

f. Status of Food and Clothing
All food was located or confiscated from farmers or villagers.

g. Mission and Intentions
377th Regt mission was to defend areas until reinforcements arrived by setting up road blocks locally. Intentions of CCF was to push ROK and UN Forces back to PUSAN.

i. Physical Condition
Most of the men in the unit were suffering from frostbite, no unusual diseases seen.

j. Artillery
Observed 4 arty pieces in his Div (126th) when crossing 38th Parallel. Observed three 92mm arty pieces in each Regt of his Div.

k. Psychological Warfare
PW picked up a UN Safe Conduct surrender leaflet at vicinity of Hill 469 (CS812548) 22 Feb 51. He kept it in his pocket and read it when he was in a foxhole. This consequently led him to remain in the area to be captured. Heard a broadcast from a plane 22 Feb 51, at the same place he was captured. Words were understandable.

l. Morale
Morale of the men in the unit was low due to fatigue from forced marches, insufficient food and equipment.

m. CCF Intentions
PW heard from Co CO that the CCF is planning to make a big mass attack in the coming spring when they receive reinforcements from MANCHURIA.
