2. ARTILLERY:
Exact number of artillery divisions in 4th Field Army is unknown. Artillery divisions known to PW are the 1st and 2d Artillery Divisions. The 1st Artillery Division is at present in CHINA.
Artillery Division in KOREA is identified as 2d Artillery Division, 4th Field Army.
2d Artillery Division since its arrival in KOREA, has been placed under the command of Joint Chinese Communist and North Korean Command headed by General PENG Ye Huai (彭德壤) (CCF).
Detailed information concerning Joint CCF NK Command is not available, because it was formulated a few weeks prior to the PW surrender.
2d Artillery Division: 4th, 5th, 6th Arty Regiments, and Ammo & Supply Unit.
4th Army Regiment: 1st, 2d, 3d, Arty Battalions and Ammo & Supply Unit.
Remarks: Designated for Battalions in 5th, and 6th Regiments: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Battalions.
Battery: 3 Gun Sections and 1 Composite Communication Signal, Observation Section.
Each gun section had 1 pack howitzer or field gun (75mm). Artillery pieces other than 75mm are not in use by the Artillery Divisions.
No unit of any size from Artillery Division is attached to Infantry Divisions. The artillery battery in each infantry regt is part of the infantry divisions T/O.
15 Jan 51, 2d Artillery Div Hq and 4th, 5th and 6th Artillery Regiments were reported (hearsay from Staff Officer) in vicinity of CH■■■ NI (CT 2615), north of IMJIN River.
Up to the time of capture (7 Feb 51), 2d Artillery Div had not been in combat.
Artillery Division could be utilized to support infantry units only on request of Army Commander to the Joint CCF - NK Command Hq.
Howitzers are of US origin or Japanese (pack howitzer) type. Field guns are of Japanese origin. Other types of guns might be in use, but the PW has never seen them.
The “92 Howtitzer” is described as follows:
 a. Pack howitzer, used by artillery batteries in Infantry Div.
 b. Make: Unknown but believed to be Japanese.
Length of Barrel: Approx 1 meter
  Weight: Approx 200 lb
  Wheels: Steel■■ined, wood
Over All Length: Approx 3 meters
Caliber: About 85mm (a little bigger than 82mm Mortar ■ound)
Characteristics: Disassembled and transported by horses when not in use.
  Range: Maximum, 3,000 meters
  Projectile: Fragmentation only
The Artillery Battery in an Infantry Regt has 4 guns of above type.
PW is not certain whether “92” represents “Model 92” or “the measurement of the bare.” Judging from the size of the shell (about the same as the 82mm Mortar round), PW believes that “92” means pack howitzer “M-92”.
Ammunition for M-92 gun is transported by pack horses or by carts when available.
The number of vehicles in an Artillery Division is unknown but believed to be limited.
Field phones and wireless sets are the main communication equipment used by the CCF Artillery Divisions.
Communication equipment mostly of US origin captured from CNA.
Captured UN artillery pieces are sent to 2d Arty Div Hq for study and to train crews to operate them.
Field guns of large caliber (105 & 155mm) are being shipped to CHINA.
Captured UN artillery ammo (75mm) are used in limited amounts.
PW heard (from staff officer) that 105 & 155mm ammo were being studied for possible use as land mines by the infantry.
Artillery pieces in general, are transported by horse teams. When in need of rapid transportation, the division commander contacts the Rear Services Unit which dispatches the necessary vehicles.
Each Artillery Regt is allotted 5 trucks which are used to haul supplies and ammo only.
Only two known types of ammo are in use: AT and fragmentation shells, employing contact or pre-determined time fuzes.
Pack Howitzer (75mm, US) Range: Approx 4,000 meters
Field Gun (75mm, Jap) Range: Approx 9,000 meters
Artillery ammo is brought from MANCHURIA, by way of ANTUNG or CHIAN by trucks of the Rear Services Unit.
