FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1653) 5 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 030600 I March 51 at PIRYONG-NI (CS 8555) by the 7th Cav Regt.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and talked freely. Promoted to the rank of sqd Ldr 19 Feb 51. Information was limited but seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into CNA March 46 PEKING (北京) and assigned to CNA 104th Div, 108th Regt.
Jan 48, surrendered with 104th Div to CCF at PEKING. 104th Div troops were assigned to component units of CCF 42d Army; PW assigned to 124th Div, 370th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plat, 1st Sqd as a rifleman.
Underwent basic infantry and political training for two months. Mar 48 PW departed with 124th Div to LIAOYANG (遼陽), arriving after twenty days of marching. Here, again underwent infantry and political training with entire Div. 124th Division’s enlisted ranks were all former CNA soldiers; but officers were all communists.
May 48, departed with 124th Div to SSUCHUAN (四川), arriving after approx 28 days of marching. Recuperated for approx one month and then departed for MANCHURIA, arriving PEIAN HSIEN (北安縣) after six weeks of travelling.
Aug 50 PW deserted his unit and took refuge in MUTANCHIANG (牡丹江). Apprehended by local police, and after several interrogations by a political officer, was returned to his unit at PEIAN HSIEN.
20 Oct 50, departed with 1st Bn 370th Regt, 124th Div to HUNGSHIHCHEN (紅石鎭) by rail, arriving two days later. The 1st BN detrained here and rested until 1 Nov 50 and rejoined 124th Division.
1 Nov 50 the division departed by rail for CHIAN (輯安), arriving one day later. The Div detrained there, and during darkness, crossed YALU River into North KOREA.
The Div proceeded south over mountain trails and arrived vicinity of WONJU (DS 1833) 16 Feb 51. It rested here a few days and then went north-westward, arriving YONGDULI (CS 7357) 19 Feb 51. Div set up defensive positions here.
2 March 51, PW deserted his unit and surrendered to US 7th Cav Regt 3 March 51 at PRYONGNI (CS 8555).

b. Location and Activities of Unit: (as of 2 March 51)
The 124th Div was to defend YONGDULI (CS 7353) area at all costs.

c. T/O & E and Strength:
4th Field Army: 38th, 39th, 42d, 50th and other Armies.
42d Army: 124th, 125th and 126th Divisions.
124th Division: 370th, 371st and 372d Inf Regiments. 1 Howitzer Bn, and other units.
370th Regiment: 1st, 2d, and 3d Inf Battalions, 2 92 type gun companies.
1st Battalion: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Companies, 1 HMG Company.
1st Company: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Platoons, 1 Mortar Platoon.

d. Replacements:
124th Div had received no replacements since entering KOREA.

e. Food and Supply:
Food was obtained through confiscation. Soldiers were fed an insufficient amount of rice and pickled vegetables twice daily.
Ammo had not been replenished since PW entered KOREA.

f. Armor and Artillery:
Observed 2 guns emplaced in mountains in vicinity of YONGDULI (DS 7353) 1 Mar 51. Barrels of guns were approx 2 meters long mounted on steel wheels. The caliber of guns was approximately 45mm.
Heard from CCF artillery men that guns were 92 type Japanese antitank guns.

g. Signal:
Battalion and high echelon units used telephones; runners were used in lower echelon units.

h. Morale:
Morale was low because of insufficient amounts of food, clothing and no confidence in CCF victory. An average of two soldiers were deserting daily.

i. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered to US 7th Cav Regt 3 March 51 at PIRYONGNI (CS 8555). Read many leaflets urging immediate surrender for good treatment and food would be awaiting.
States that after surrendering he found leaflets to be nothing but false propaganda; more food was received in CCF than in PW enclosure.

j. Other Information:
19 Feb 51, heard from his company commander that 124th Div and other units of 42d Army had to defend YONGDULI area for next 20 days, until they would be relieved by 3 Army Groups of 2d Field Army.
