ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3941　10 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0209)　3 March 1951

Captured by elements of B Co, 19th RCT. Was in good physical condition. Cooperative but illiterate. Information should be assessed accordingly. Not recommended for further interrogation.

Conscripted into CCF Dec 50 as stretcher bearer and sent to KOREA without training. Approx 1 regiment of replacements left CHINA in Dec and crossed YALU River 10 Jan 51. 13 Jan replacements arrived HUICHON. Each sqd of 113th Div received 4 replacements. PW assigned to his present unit (337th Regt, 3d Bn, 7th Co, 8th Sqd) as ammo bearer. Date crossed 38th parallel unk. 28 Feb 3d Bn arrived vic Hill 378 CS 659553. Upon arrival PW unit (8th Sqd) was ordered to dig in at foot of mountain as first line of defense. 070600 Mar PW position was attacked by UN forces. Subject and comrade taken prisoner while the remaining 7 men retreated.

3d Bn had 7th, 8th and 9th Co and HMG Co.

To defend Hill 378 CS 659553. Heard among soldiers 3d Bn might withdraw.

7th Co & 3d Bn CP located vic Hill 378.

Limited amount of food procured from villagers. S/A ammo approx 40 - 50 rd per man.

Morale low due to bitter cold and incessant air and arty bombardment.

Picked up leaflet but was not able to read (illiterate).

Heard broadcast from airplane telling them to surrender. PW and other EM decided to surrender but were under constant watch by their NCO.

j. Arty bombardment causing heavy casualties. Heard 8th Co lost approx 1 plat and 9th Co approx 2 plat.
