ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3939　10 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (7th Div (4) LDI - 126)　15 February 1951

PW was guarding an ammo dump at SEOUL approximately 5 days before UN Forces made INCHON Landing (o/a 10 Sep 50). PW ordered to proceed to CHOLWON to get some supplies by truck. At CHOLWON, heard that the UN Forces landed at INCHON. All troops in CHOLWON area were ordered to withdraw North. Deserted his unit and returned home.

At the end of Nov 50, PW forced to join 6th Div, 3d Regt, 3d Bn, 2d Co, at CHAGWAN DO. At that time, 6th Div was being reorganized at CHAGWAN DO. 33d Brigade with approximate strength of 400 was integrated into the 6th Div at CHAGWAN DO. Majority of the officers of the newly organized division came from the 6th Div. Majority of the troops came from the CHOLLA NAMDO Volunteer Corps. Approximate strength of the reorganized division was 2,000.

6th Div traveled only during darkness and through mountain roads. During the division’s Southward movement, they were attacked 5 times by UN airplanes and approximately 200 were KIA and 600 were WIA. Believes that approximately 400 to 500 troops were suffering from frostbite and some type of epidemic.

3d Regt, 6th Div, arrived YUDONG NI 2 Jan 51. PW deserted his unit when it departed for KENA RI 23 Jan 51. At that time, troops from 3d Div were being integrated into both 6th and 7th Div.

PW was apprehended by the 7th Div and re-assigned to 3d Co, 2d Bn, 3d Regt, 26 Jan 51. PW was working at the Regt rear but later used in transporting and guarding UN and ROK PW. While on duty, observed one US and 16 ROK soldiers.

Believes that approximately 500 to 600 troops of the 7th Div were suffering from frostbite and epidemic. No casualties through UN air attacks.

Surrendered to ROK Unit (5th Div) 10 Feb 51 at AN HUNG RI.

In early Feb 51, 7th Div was reassigned to II Corps which was below strength.

7th Div:

Observed about 10 civilians carrying mortar shells on their backs at an area approximately 12 km South of KENA RI 7 Feb 51.

A pair of winter shoes (rubber sole canvas top) was issued to troops 8 Feb 51. Food, medicine and clothing supplies are short.

Morale of troops is low. Reasons are given as follows: Shortage of food, medical, and clothing supplies; epidemics; constant UN air strikes. However, morale among officers is high and the troops were told that if captured they will be tortured and killed. If it is known that the UN Forces do not kill their prisoners many will surrender voluntarily.

Communication between Regt and Div was by radio. Communication between Bn and lower echelon was by runner.

6 Jan 51, CCF officers and 7th Div officers held a conference at YANGI RI. Following plans were made but were never carried out: II Corps to attack WONJU from the East, V Corps to attack from the North, and the CCF to attack from the West.

7th Div was last observed at an area 28 km East of AN HUNG RI 10 Feb 51.

For the AC of S, G-2:
