ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3901　9 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI 0289)　16 February 1951

Had approximately two years of CCF military service, and although cooperative, he possessed little knowledge of particular value. Not recommended for further interrogation.

Conscripted into CNA (52nd Army) Dec 48 at CHILIN, MANCHURIA. After participating in various campaigns he was captured by CCF at TATAN, CHINA, Jan 49, and forced to join 39th Army, 116th Div, 346th Regt, 1st Bn Hq, Signal Sqd.

October 50, 39th Army departed ANTUNG and marched across YALU River over a railroad bridge. After four days of march, they attacked UN Forces and succeeded in occupying UNSAN. However, 39th Army immediately withdrew to a position about 8 Km from TAECHON. After resting for two weeks, departed and marched to Hill 914, northeast of UIJONGBU, arriving 30 Dec 50. Attacking UN Forces here, they proceeded to UIJONGBU, and SEOUL arriving 4 Jan 51, just as the UN Forces withdrew. 11 Jan 51, departed SEOUL and arrived at a village 24 km N of SEOUL on the following day. 3 Feb 51, marched south and after passing through SEOUL, marched eastward on main road following HAN River on their right. 9 Feb 51, crossed a rock reenforced concrete bridge of PUKHAN River with a railroad bridge to the left. Proceeded on the main road and arrived CHIPYONG-NI 12 Feb 51. From CHIPYONG-NI, proceeded east over mountain roads, and after marching for awhile they moved southward. 116th Div proceeded southwest and arrived the last known area.

1st Bn 346th Regt arrived vic of CHISAN-NI (CS848412) 14 Feb 51. 1st Bn commander ordered PW to relay a message to 2nd Co 1st Bn, which had proceeded further south to man a hill facing the UN Forces, to descend the hill before daybreak to prevent detection. PW was unable to located 2nd Co and while wandering around was captured by UN Forces 15 Feb 51 in vicinity of (CS842401).

116th Div (4th Bn): 346th, 347th, 348th Regt, Security Co, Engr Plat, Telephone Co, Wireless Plat, First Aid Unit, Arty Btry.

346th Regt (2d Det): 3 bn, Arty Btry, First Aid Unit, Wireless Sqd, Telephone Plat, Signal Plat.

1st Bn (2d Sector Unit): 3 Co, HMG Co, Signal Sqd, First Aid Sqd, Kitchen Sqd.

1st Bn CP was in vicinity of CHISAN-NI (CS848412) and 346th Regt CP in vic of KUDEN-CHI (CS851433) approx 2 Km N of 1st Bn CP. 116th Div CP was in vic ILSIN (CS854447) approx 2 Km N of 346th Regt CP. The other two divisions of 39th Army are generally located within a radius of 10 Km, with his 116th Div to the west, another to the east and abreast, and the third to the rear, the whole army forming a triangle. The 10 Km radius is measured from a point in the center of the triangle. Actual disposition of 115th and 117th divisions unknown.

Wireless communication: 1st Bn 1 hand-cranked generator, 1 field telephone (US).

1st Bn received ammunition for MG, Mortar, Rifle, etc 7 Feb 51 while resting at a village 24 Km N of SEOUL.

Heard from other troops a number of men have left Div 25 Jan 51 for MANCHURIA to obtain replacements. No replacements were received on yet.

All troops of 1st Bn received a pair of new rubber shoes and light cotton trousers 7 Feb 51.

First two months after entering KOREA, PW was served rice, millet, corn and canned pork transported from CHINA, after two months, food such as rice, millet, corn and other grain was procured locally.

The plan of action, according to Bn Commander, was to employ one company as brit to lure an estimated battalion of UN Forces deployed in front of them, so that three regt of the 116th Div can surround and defeat this UN battalion.

Regt CO and higher ranking officers rode horses and had guards to protect them. Heard rumors that four soldiers of his unit were shot for rape.

There were no contagious disease, but all troops were suffering from malnutrition.

i. Air Support:

PW Bn commander stated that they will receive air support. Time and date is unknown.

j. Effect of Air Attack:

Received air raids almost every day and estimated 40% of the casualties were due to air attacks.

PW picked up many leaflets, but he could not understand them. Heard a broadcast, but believed it was in the Korean language because all Koreans in the village evacuated and later US aircraft bombed the village.
