2. ASSESSMENT:
Appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. A farmer prior to entering the military service with the CNA. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Information considered fairly reliable. Recommended for further interrogation. Surrendered voluntarily with 6 of his men 16 Feb 51.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength, and Equipment:
38th Army composed of 112th, 113th, 114th Div, Arty Regt, Engr Bn, Supply Section, Medical Section, Recon Unit, Propaganda Unit, Cavalry Co and Communications Unit.
114th Div composed of 340th, 341st, 344th Regt, Engr Bn, Medical Unit, Supply Unit, Recon Unit, Communications Section, Propaganda Section, Transportation Unit. Arty Bn and Guard Bn deactivated approx one month ago.
2d Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co, HMG Co, Arty Plat, Communications Sqd, Medical Sqd.
4th Co composed of two Rifle Plat and 60mm Mortar Plat.

Majority of casualties were caused by trench feet. Air strikes and frostbite also took heavy toll.
340th Regt had 12 heavy Mortars. 2d Bn had 2 mortars. 4th Co had 6 LMG and one 60mm mortar. Mortar Plat had one 60mm mortar.

b. Assignment and Intention:
Platoon’s mission was to hold position CS461465 to prevent UN forces from crossing HAN River. O/a 13 Feb 51, heard from Co CO that 39th, 40th, and 42d Armies plus I NK Corps were to hit UN forces on both flanks.

c. Disposition:
PW and 6 others comprising the 60mm Mortar Plat were on hill 327 CS461465 prior to surrendering on masse. 4th Co was approx 400 meters W of PW location. 2d bn was approx 800 meters W of PW position 16 Feb 51. 14 Feb 51, 340th Regt hq was approx 3 km to the rear of 2d Bn. 15 Feb 51, 1st Bn was in vic of 340th Regt. 14 Feb 51, 3d Bn was on a hill approx 3 km W of PW position.

d. Communications:
Wireless and telephones used between Bn and higher echelons. Bugles also used to transmit orders if units were in close contact. Telephone lines were laid on the ground. There were two (US and Chinese) trucks in the 340th Regt.

e. Personalities:
LIANG, I-yen (梁義■) CG, 38th Army
CHE, Chung-yu (■■■) CG, 114th Div

f. Artillery:
Observed a horse drawn artillery pieces in vic IMJIN River approx a month ago. Believes that above guns belong to 38th Army.

g. Morale:
Morale in unit relatively low due to the following reasons:
(1) Lack of food, shelter and clothing.
(2) Fear of air strikes and lack of air power.

h. Chronology:
Conscripted into CNA Jul 33 at his home address. Served with CNA until Mar 42 at which time given a medical discharge. Nov 45, forcibly conscripted into CCF. Assigned to present duty Jun 48. Oct 50, 38th Army arrived at HUIAN-HSIENG and crossed YALU River 27 Oct 50, over a wooden bridge. After crossing YALU River, marched to vic SAMSO-RI (12 km SE of SEOUL) via MANP’OJIN (BA7259), KANGGYE (BA9737), KAECH’ON (YD5596), and TOKCH’ON (BV6904) arriving o/a 5 Jan 51. Crossed HAN River o/a 25 Jan 51, on foot at unknown location. After arriving in vic CS461465, PW platoon was assigned to defend hill 327 CS461465. Believes that the remainder of the 38th Army was deployed in the same vicinity.

i. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food procured locally. Men were fed an average of two meals a day. Ammo supply critical. Approximately 50 rd of ammo per rifle remained at time of capture. No additional ammo was received by unit since arriving in KOREA.

j. Replacements:
In Dec 1950 heard that replacements were arriving from CHINA but did not see any replacements in unit. Wounded personnel are evacuated to the rear and upon recovery are assigned to other units.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered voluntarily. Picked up a surrender leaflet approx 8 days ago and intended to surrender since then.

l. UN PW:
O/a 6 Nov 50, observed approx 250 US PW at TOKCHON (BV6904). Prisoners were resting on a hill.

m. Foreign Technicians:
There was one Chinese interpreter (Korean) assigned to each Co.

n. Medical:
Did not receive any immunizations since coming to KOREA. No knowledge of typhus in unit.

o. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
PW Co was subjected to a night bombing attack approx two months ago and suffered two casualties.
No knowledge of artillery, armor and/or air reinforcements on I Corps front.

p. Chemical:
(1) No knowledge of mushroom poison being used by CCF troops in KOREA.
(2) Unit was never issued gas masks and did not receive any type of gas training.
(3) No knowledge of chemical grenade nor did he see or hear of it.
(4) No knowledge of any energy-giving material used by CCF.

4. REMARKS:
PW was previously interrogated by the 25th IPW Team. Incorporating 25th LDI, unnumbered, dtd 17 Feb 51.
