2. ASSESSMENT:
PW in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Student prior to entering military service. Captured 14 Feb 51. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
I NK Corps composed of 8th, 17th and 47th Div. 8th Div composed of 1st, 2d, and 3d Regt. 1st Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bn.

Casualties were received from ary and o/a fire. No air strikes received by PW Co.
Comm Co had rifles (200 rd of ammo per weapon), 2 hand grenades per man, 2 switchboards (11 plugs), 3 radio transmitters, 2 walkie talkies, and 8 telephones.
1st Regt had 2 AT rifles, unk number of SMG, and hand grenades.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
O/a 10 Feb 51, heard over telephone, the 8th Div CG ordering 1st Regt CO to have his Regt cut UN escape route on MSR between SEOUL and SUWON by setting up road blocks and laying mines because 17th and 47th Div will start attacking from SEOUL. If successful, 8th Div will occupy SEOUL.

c. Disposition:
Heard from a messenger, that I NK Corps CP located in the former SYNGMAN RHES residence in SEOUL. 12 Feb 51, heard 8th Div CP was approx 9 km north of YONGCHON (SEOUL City) in the hills.

d. Communication:
Regt and higher echelons used radios, telephones, and runners. Lower echelons used telephones and runners. PW Regt had 3 trucks, 1 jeep, and a number of oxcarts.

e. Personalities:
PAEK, (fnu), (Phonetic), Col - 1st Regt CO.
CH’OE, Jin So, (Phonetic), Capt - CO, 1st Regt.
CH’OE, (fnu), (Phonetic), Sr Lt - CO, Comm Co, 1st Regt.

f. Morale:
Morale low because the unit became disorganized during its last battle 13 Feb 51. Also fear of possible air strikes and lak of equipment. Whenever the unit received talks on communism the morale seemed to rise.

g. Chronology:
PW enlisted in NKA 3 Aug 50, at SEOUL and went to CHORWON (CT4335) and received approx one month of basic training. When UN forces approached CHORWON in mid Oct 50, the personnel fled to CHOSAN (YF3524). Assigned to present unit at CHOSAN in late Nov 50.
8th Div reorganized at this time. Div departed CHOSAN in early Dec 50 and arrived P’YONGYANG, travelling through mountain roads at night. From P’YONGYANG, Div travelled on main road through SARIWON (YC4085), KAESONG (BT8304) and arrived SEOUL o/a 5 Jan 51.
Crossed HAN River 5 Jan 51 in vic TOJONG NI (CS185555). Five or six days later withdrew to 3 km N of SEOUL. During this withdrawal Div crossed the HAN River W of steel RR bridge. After the 8th Div withdrew to N of SEOUL, 1st Regt was sent to AHYONG DONG 11 Feb 51. 12 Feb 51, Regt crossed HAN River at vic TUKTO (CS280555) over ice and arrived S of KWANAK SAN (CS2043) 13 Feb 51. On the same afternoon engaged by UN forces and started to retreat. PW lagged behind because of the heavy burden he was carrying (1 sack of rice and 1 field phone). Fainted and upon regaining consciousness was captured.

h. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Additional supply of ammo (100 rd s/a ammo) was received in SEOUL. Ammo supply was sufficient. Food was insufficient.

i. Replacements:
No replacements received by unit. Wounded given medical treatment and upon recovering reassigned. Stragglers were integrated unit.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW read UN leaflets and intended to surrender

k. Foreign Troops:
Heard from friends, while passing through P’YONGYANG, in late Dec 50, that there were some Russian officers in P’YONGYANG.

l. Medical:
Did not receive any immunizations. Typhus was the most common disease in unit. DDT powder was being used as a preventative. Sprayed twice with DDT at CHOSAN and SEOUL.

m. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
Co was never subjected to night bombing.

n. Dummy Positions:
O/a 5 Feb 51, heard from a friend that dummy mines were being laid on MSR between SEOUL and SUWON to confuse UN forces.
