2. ASSESSMENT:
Not observant and sometimes inconsistent in his statements. Information does not seem very reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
Conscripted into NKA at HWANGJU (YC 4183) 10 Sep 50, and assigned to 98th Regt, 5th Bn, 3d Co, 2d Plat with which he underwent forty-five days of basic training. No military uniforms or weapons were issued to anyone and during training, only wooden rifles were used. At that time, 98th Regt had an estimated 2,000 soldiers (all recruits).
O/a 25 Oct 50, marched to CHAKANG area where it arrived o/a 5 Nov 50.
At the CHAKANG area, 1,000 soldiers were left with 98th Regt and 1,000 were transferred to other units. PW was transferred to 15th Div, 3d Regt, 2d Bn, 6th Co, 1st Platoon.
3d Regt of 15th Div was composed entirely of recruits, and no one had uniforms. All were issued uniforms at CHAKANG, but no weapons. Here, 3d Regt underwent another month of training.
O/a 5 Dec 50 left CHAKANG and arrived PYONGCH’ANG (DS 4735) o/a 24 Feb 1951.
While enroute to PYONGCH’ANG, troops were each issued a Russian type rifle and 100 rounds of ammo per rifle. However, did not remember name of place where issued.
At PYONGCH’ANG each soldier was issued two grenades of Russian make.
O/a 25 Feb 51, attacked by a ROK unit and began to retreat. PW was wounded and was in a private home, where he remained until captured by ROK unit.

b. T/O & E and Strength:
3d Battalion: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Companies.
2d Battalion: 4th, 5th and 6th Rifle Companies, HMG Co.
6th Company: 3 Rifle Platoons, HMG Platoon.

 From CHAKANG to PYONGCH’ANG, 1st Platoon lost 8 men of which 5 had some unknown stomach illness; 3 others were transferred to other units.
 At PYONGCH’ANG 2 men were KIA.

 From 35 men lost by 6th Co, some were sick of an unknown stomach illness, and others were KIA. Could not estimate number in each group.

d. Replacements:
Since PW joined 3d Regt, 15th Div in Nov 50, no replacements had been received.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food procured by Bn CO from village heads. Distributed it to Platoon Leaders, who in turn, gave it to mess personnel. Food procured consisted chiefly of rice and corn, which was distributed twice daily, morning and evening.
Water procured from streams and rivers without being purified.
Civilians were being conscripted from villages and used as food carriers. Each civilian had to carry food for one to three miles, where he was released, and another conscripted civilian assumed the task. In the 3d Regt, each Company used five civilians and three oxen as food carriers.

f. Signal:
There was only one radio in 2d Bn.

g. Morale:
Morale of troops is low because of lack of food and adequate clothing.

h. Medical:
Noticed about 35 men sick in his battalion, but could not specify illness.
No immunization or other counter-measures have been taken.

i. Psychological Warfare:
After being wounded at PYONGCH’ANG, entered a house where he remained until captured.
Saw some UN leaflets o/a 22 Feb 51 and heard a loudspeaker broadcast o/a 25 Feb 51, but could not understand what was being said.
Did not hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts.
