a. Chronology:
20 Sep 50: Conscripted at WONSAN, assigned to 42d Div.
20 Nov 50: 42d Div integrated 1st Div 10 km SE of KANGGYE. Trained one month.
20 Dec 50: 1st Div passed by 30 CHUNGJIN on foot.
26 Dec 50: Passed through HAMHUNG on foot at night.
29 Dec 50: Div arr WONSAN.
31 Dec 50: Arr SINGOSAN (CU6301)
7 Jan 51: Div arr KUMSONG (CT7752). Received tactics trng.
6 Feb 51: Div dep KUMSONG.
14 Feb 51: Div arr HONGCH’ON.
19 Feb 51: Passed through PYONGCH’ON (DS4635)
20 Feb 51: Deserted unit 20 km S of PYONGCHON.
24 Feb 51: Surrendered to US troops at YUMUN-NI.
Troops movements made on foot only at night.

Food: No food received from rear. Procured from local villages.
Ammo: Resupplied with 100 rd of rifle ammo at KUM CHON, 6 Feb 51.

LEE, Chun Pi: Capt, CO, 8th Co, age 27.

f. Intentions:
Last observed 3d Regt heading S at point 20 km S of PYONGCHON (DS4635)

g. Casualties:
3 men in 8th Co: typhoid.
2 men killed by air attack at HAMHUNG.
5 or 6 suffered serious frostbite.

h. Morale:
Low due to lack of food and clothing. Exhausted from constant night marching and lack of sleep and rest. Majority of troops willing to surrender but due to strict surveillance by security member, were not able to desert. Deserters shot to death.

i. Other Units:
Observed 2 bn, 15th Div at HONGCH’ON, 10 Feb 51.

j. Night Bombing:
8th Co bombed near HAMHUNG 23 Dec 50.
Approx 3 fragmentation bombs were dropped.
2 killed, one truck destroyed.
Troops told to lay down on ground in event of bombing.
Most effective in demoralizing troops.

k. Propaganda:
Troops given indoctrination by political officers enroute to South KOREA from KWANGGYE.
Following is statement made by political officers:
“The US is using the armed forces of 53 nations in fighting a war in KOREA, which is intended only for her benefit. The US Army throws the helpless negroes out in the front line and forces them to fight. If the negroes try to retreat, they are shot from behind.
We are fighting for a world peace. We will win final victory.”
