FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI 0288) 16 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHANG Shu Chin (姜■■) (CCF)

UNIT: 38th CCF Army, 114th Div, 342nd Regt, 1st Bn, HMG Co, 1st Plat, 3rd Sqd.
DUTY: HMG Ammo Bearer
OCCUPATION: Student
EDUCATION: 5 yr Primary School
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: Surrendered on 131000 Feb 51 at Hill 277 (CS480409) to US troops.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and information fairly reliable. Answered all questions freely but did not remember dates and place names. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
5 Feb 51, Regt crossed the HAN River, headed SW and arrived at an unknown place where the Regt remained for a night, but withdrew because of UN arty action. 342nd Regt arrived at CS482420, vicinity of PW surrender. Stayed for approx 4 days without detection from UN Forces. 11 Feb 51, PW Co, 2nd Co, and the under strength Regt Security Co were attacked by UN Forces. As a result they were scattered. The men were compelled to seek safety on the adjacent knoll, where other unknown units were also under fire. Prior to escape, he saw only 7 men of HMG Co, 40 men of the 2nd Co, inclusive of a Regt Security Co in retreat towards the next hill. 131000 Feb 51, PW came out of hiding and surrendered to UN Forces.

b. Organization and Strength
38th Army had the 112th, 113th, and the 114th Div. 114th Div had 340th, 341st, and 342d Regt. 114th Div original strength was approx 8,000 men but present strength is unknown. 342d Regt had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn. Its original strength was approx 2,000 men but present strength is unknown.
PW 1st Bn formerly had 300 men, but the present strength is unknown. The Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Co (strength unknown) and a HMG Co of 95 men. The HMG Co consisted of 3 Plat with 3 Sqd of 7 men each. 2nd Co strength inclusive of Regt Security Co and attached HMG Co was approx 100 men. 2nd Co, itself, had approx 40 men. There were approx 20 men to the HMG Co and 40 men to the Regt Security Co. At present most of the units are under strength. Some companies were dissolved in order to supplement under strength companies.

c. Deployment of Other Units
When 342d Regt arrived at CS482420, 340th and 341st Regt were also in the vicinity.

d. Status of Arms and Ammunition
Whatever arms and ammo his Co had, were brought from CHINA but most of these had been exhausted since. No new supplies arrived from CHINA. Almost all of the present arms and ammo used by the Co were captured US weapons. PW HMG Co had the following arms and ammo prior to his surrender:

e. Status of Food and Clothing
No food or clothing except shoes (Chinese made) were received.

f. Mission and Intention
Mission of 342d Regt was to defend the area where he surrendered, at all cost.

h. Medical
Most of the troops suffered from frostbite and stomach illness. In HMG Co of approx 65 men, 3 had frostbite.

i. Psychological Warfare
Told by their superiors that they must aid North KOREA in as much as both were fighting for the same ideal. They were told that they must fight because the US will eventually attack CHINA.
Saw many leaflets and picked up several. Their Co CO did not restrict the men from doing so but told them if they surrendered they would be killed because the enemy was unable to understand Chinese.

j. Air
Hit on 4 occasions by jets, and heavy casualties were suffered by strafing and bombing. The most his Co suffered at one time were 13 men killed by Napalm.
