ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 3859　8 March 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div -LDI - 0208)　3 March 1951

PW voluntarily surrendered to elements of 2nd Bn, 21st RCT. Was in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW of average intelligence although illiterate. Was cooperative and information obtained considered fairly reliable.

PW joined Chinese Nationalist Army 37 and assigned to 22nd Div, then transferred to 32nd Army, in early 50. 32nd Army surrendered to CCF at HAINANDO Apr 50. After 3 months of Communist indoctrination assigned to his present unit.

38th Army composed of 113th Div, other two unk. 113th div composed of 337th, 338th and 339th Regt. And heard that an arty unit is attached to Division. 337th Regt composed of 3 bn and 2nd Bn composed of 4th, 5th and 6th Rifle Co. 3 Plat of HMG Co is

6th Co, 2nd Bn, 337th Regt had the following weapons as of 022100 Mar 51:

1 Knee Mortar (Jap type) with 15 rd ammo.

1 x 30 Cal MG.

9 US BAR with 1000 rd ammo per BAR.

2nd Bn had following:

2 x 60mm mortars with 20 rd per mortar.

2 x 2.36 Bazookas. Observed 4 rd.

Observed these weapons at Bn Hq and was told that above weapons are used wherever required.

As of 022100 March 51 2nd Bn, 337th Regt was 400 meters directly N of RR tunnel which is 700 to 800 meters in length. Tunnel is located vic Hill 146 CS 613522. 1st Bn, 337th Regt was located in vic of E entrance of RR tunnel and 3rd Bn, 337th Regt located in vic opposite end of same tunnel. Mission of his Co was to hold area along hill and road running along foot of hill 146. 337th Regt Hq located on highest hill 4 to 5 km N of RR tunnel. Heard that a arty unit is located in vic of Regt Hq. Heard 7 to 8 rd fired 021300 March 51 and 2 to 3 rd 010730 March 51 from this location. Believes these arty pieces may be the same arty pieces (2) observed by PW when crossing 38th parallel. Cal of guns unk, observed each gun pulled by 8 horses.

Every man in Co have 5 to 6 days supply of food (biscuits) on hand.

113th Div did not receive replacements since entering KOREA. Heard 6 days ago that other 2 divisions of 38th Army received replacements. Number of replacements or training of these troops unk. PW has no knowledge of 113th Div being relieved or to be reinforced.

Observed 100 US PW prior to crossing 38th parallel. 40 were returned to UN positions.

Heard loud speaker broadcast o/a 1 Mar 51. Due to great distance was unable to heard broadcast distinctly. Believes that majority of troops in his co desires to surrender but are afraid of being shot by their superiors. Each individual soldier is responsible for the other. For instance if a soldier deserts, the man responsible will be severely punished. Therefore soldiers are also afraid of being shot by their own men to avoid punishment. Reading or discussing leaflet sternly prohibited.
